When did you start wearing makeup?

June 17, 2010

The title says it all, really. How old were you when you started wearing makeup? What age did you start getting interested in it? Were you ever forbidden to wear it until a certain age? I would love to hear your stories.

As a young girl I would always want to be like “mommy” and would go to her dressing table and put it all over my face, with my favorite being lipstick. I would even apply it on my forehead! I hung out at my Mom’s dressing table so much that eventually my parents bought me this plastic kid-version and I was in love. (Although I’m looking at the photo now and it seems to be a bathroom sink instead of a dressing table? Oh well.) I was not allowed to have ‘real makeup’ on my dressing table so I think the closest I got to having ‘makeup’ was baby powder, so I remember just applying it all over my face… crazy! (That’s what I have white patches all over my face in the photo haha.)

It was not until I was 15 when I entered high school that I started wearing makeup. I decided upon mascara, and my mom took me to a MAC counter and we picked out a mascara. It was so exciting! (I know I once mentioned that it was eyeliner, but I just checked with my mom and it was actually mascara, then eyeliner a month later.) Soon after I discovered ‘smokey eyes’ and it was a lost cause – I was smitten with makeup! ;)

When did you start wearing makeup?

Hey Dip! :) Oh that’s interesting! My mom doesn’t wear makeup except for red lipstick, that siren haha! What made you start to wear makeup?

Reply

Dip June 18, 2010 at 00:44

probably because i was really into the punk scene and so i got into heavy black eye liner haha

Aw, yes! I think that’s why I started with heavy eyeliner too.

We might have similar music tastes, I think! Who are your favorite bands? :)

I started wearing makeup when I was 16 but only on weekends. I would wear some foundation at school if my skin was behaving badly though.

Oh same! Unfortunately I had really bad skin in highschool at 16 too so I would load the foundation on, not knowing it was just making it worse. :( Now I stay far away from foundation!

That picture is too cute, Renee!
I started wearing make up around 15 too, and would buy it myself and hid it from my mum, just mascara and a gray liner. I was never forbidden from make up, but my mum isn’t too much of a girly girl. My mum obviously noticed, asking jokingly if I had a black eye: now, a few years later, my mum’s grown interested from seeing what I do with my make up. :)

Thanks Michaela :)

Aw, that’s a cute story. I looove black eye makeup too so I also get a lot of ‘black eye’ eyes comments. :-P And OMG you just made me think of gray eyeliner. I didn’t know they made that?! I love gray eyeshadow, gray nail polish, gray clothes… why didn’t I think of gray eyeliner?! That’s Michaela, now I know what’s next in my shopping list :)

I remembered the first time I used a lipstick, i was 6 years old…
but i was just fooling around back then… I was a kid!
I’d say the joker might be proud of me if he sees the way I put on my lipstick :p

Renee June 18, 2010 at 00:46

LOL, Joker!!! I’m sure we’ve all been there. ;) Aw, I think I was 3 when I first discovered my mom’s lipstick! Isn’t it strange how it’s always lipstick first?!

The first time I started wearing make-up was when i was 13/14 and only to school, it was only eye liner the gradually I used fondation and blusher. I wish someone taught me how to use eyeliner carefully, in my school photo I look a mess! However its all a part of growing up :)

Renee June 18, 2010 at 00:47

So true, Molly. It’s all about trial and error! That’s why we always have so funny looking school photos. Messy eyeliner sure beats bright orange eyeshadow, though… my school photo was one MESS! :-P

I personally am not a fan of foundation on my skin, it feels to heavy and I don’t want to clog my skin with make up right now and it doesn’t help I have acne *angry face*. I’m going to focus on looking after my skin and not wear full face make up till I’m about 17 or 18 so hopefully my skin will be in good condition by then XD

Reply

Renee June 18, 2010 at 01:30

Agreed, Chloe. I don’t use foundation anymore. Like you, I hate to clog my pores and it just feels nasty on! I only use a translucent organic powder now for coverage – I don’t allow anything else on my face!

Mineral powder foundation is worth a try, though – you get as much coverage as liquid foundation! Really good for acne too, ’cause it’s really gentle to your skin.

haha I technically started a year ago at fifteen, but I only started regularly wearing it to school this year at sixteen. I never remembered my mom wearing any sort of makeup, but she told me she used to wear lipstick and everything up until I was about four years old, and she told me I would always ask her why she was drawing a line around her lips. XD My first memory of having makeup put on me was when my parents were taking pictures of me in a fancy dress, and my mom put some red lipstick on me and I remembered it didn’t taste good…lol. But ever since I started getting into makeup, she’s started getting back into it too! Like now she puts on some lipgloss and powder before she heads out, instead of nothing. I’m so proud. XD

Aww, that photo is so cute!

I’ve always been obsessed with make-up. I remember butchering a few of my mum’s lipsticks :P I used to have some brush on/peel off “nail polishes” by a brand called Tinkerbell that I was completely obsessed with when I was little. I also remember getting a little Sanrio eyeshadow duo that was blue and pink when I was about 7 or something… I think I managed to give myself some truly hideous makeovers!

I probably started to get into make-up properly when I was about 14. I started with clear mascara and kohl eyeliner that my mum didn’t want. I got into MAC a few years later and it’s been downhill ever since!

I started wearing makeup at the age of… 20. And it was eyeliner. I only started on foundation/face powder when I was 21 or so @_@ Still pretty much a makeup virgin, I only ever wear eyeliner and face powder, and have no idea how to apply eyeshadow, blush, etc.

I’ve only ever put make-up on myself when I was 10 for dress ups at a friend’s house, encouraged by her who was really getting into girly stuff (more than me).

So far, I haven’t worn make-up out except for ball recently, which I had someone put on me since I’m completely clueless when it comes to this. (18 btw.)

Still, I do have a growing interest in it (hence following this blog) but I really don’t know where to start. (Also, not exactly comfortable with wearing it as an everyday thing.)

I am 16 and I stilll don’t wear makeup. I accasionally do, if I had a lot of time to spare or if I’m going to a formal occasion. I don’t think that makeup should be something worn everyday. Personally, I beleive that girls look so much prettier when they are natural.

wow!!! i remeber stealing an eyeliner from my mom and eating it….doesnt nearly taste as good as it looks on your eyes. When i was about 13 i met my bestfriend in the whole wide wurld and she was obsessed because her mom was a makeup artist for mac….so she always got the latest products as ‘freebies’ i remeber going to her house fresh faced and coming hme looking like a zombie…i knew nothing literally…but after a few well earned classes from my friends at skewlll…my obsession started!!!!

I started when I was 16. My older sister bought some magazines and we were staring at models and their stunning make over. Obviously I wanted to look like them and I started analysing all those pictures…Finally after spending all my life savings :) )), i managed to pull out those looks, since then I’ve been continuously obsessed with make-up :) ))

hahaha I loved the picture, so cute ?!!!
My mother (which, I never told u I guess, but she passed away in 2008, i miss her so much), she was the best to me and she really liked cosmetics, I remember wearing everything that she had!! And it´s rare to see a picture of myself when i was a kid (since 4, till 9) WITHOUT red or pink lipstick LOL!
When I turned 11 I started selling AVON. With 15 I started selling another brand
(Contem 1g). So u can imagine I´ve been buying and trying stuff for a long time…
But I really LEARNED HOW TO wear it correctly only like 2 or 3 yrs ago. When I look at my old pictures I can clearly see the difference, and I also learned how to take care of my skin, which was horrible in the past. There´s still soooooo much more I need to learn, I feel like I know nothing, but blogs like yours and youtube videos have helped me so much!!!

xo :)

I start pretty young, at 11, when i started using a trap-in-70.s white frost shimmer pencil over my lids and tons of lipgloss, I lookes hideous! But then i get into some makeup classes and by 13 i already knew how to apply tons of concealer, powder, shadow, mascara, lipstick and everything I could imagine just for school (looking back at pictures, iugh, so much worse)

Luckly my mom tough this was just a fase and that i would find a more appropiate look (which i did!) but i can’t excuse my mom for letting me go out of the house with such a ridiculos “makeover”

I was actually 11 when I started wearing makeup regularly, but not much. just like lipgloss and a little mascara. I didn’t start wearing full out makeup until i was about 14.

oh gosh… I was 12 when I started (regularly, anyways) and I’m 14 now. I started with cover-up and mascara, and I’ve added eyeliner, blush, and occasionally eyeshadow (which would happen more often if I actually remembered to buy some more!). ‘Course, my mom doesn’t want me to have that caked-on look so she won’t get me foundation so I’m stuck with my orange-y cover-up on pale skin :/

Nahh.. I’m 12 and I don’t even have a cell phone yet. But don’t let your friends influence you. Do what you feel. Like, my hair is a super dark brown and my first cousin, her hair is the same color as mine and she bleached the top half a dirty blonde. I thought it looked really cool so i wanna dye my hair like that. I wanna do what i feel, not what my friends feel. You know what i mean?

My mom rarely wears makeup at all. I became interested in makeup around 4th grade, by then I was already wearing lip gloss and nail polish and stuff. In 4th grade I started to wear blush. In 5th grade I wore eyeshadow, and in 6th grade I wore mascara. I realize this is a little early but now I’m in 8th grade and I am more experienced with makeup so I know how to apply it well while keeping it toned down, unlike many of my classmates. :)

Umm I’m 12 turning 13 and I’ve never worn makeup out anywhere. I messed with my my mom’s makeup case about a week ago and I honestly thought I looked like an alien with it on. The first time I wore it was when I was at a birthday party in November back in 2010. That was basically the only time. I used to beg my mom could I wear it to be like my friends at school but she always said no. But as the year passed, I realized that I looked beautiful without it and plus, you need experience to put that stuff on. And my mom doesn’t even wear it. She said I could start when I turned 14 next year but now, I’m not really interested. Like, I’ll wear lip gloss, but that’s about it. I have intentions of wearing it, but not until college. And plus, I get shaky sometimes so I’ll probably mess up the eyeliner. ;D

Haha, I have a lot of makeup for someone who doesn’t wear a lot (several liners, blushes, etc). The only thing I do are my brows and a little concealer on a day to day basis. I like doing make up for fun at home just to see how I can transform my face, but I do not think I’ll ever wear it out.

I went through a phase in 7th grade to wear a ton of eye makeup. Eyeshadow, eyeliner, mascara, the works. Then I stopped once I entered 8th grade, except for an occasional mascara here and there, and has pretty much been the same since then with the exception of formal events.

Dip – Oh I have heard of Spinnerette and Carcass! Ah, I used to be much better with band names. AP magazine was my favorite magazine in highschool so I used to know all sorts of really cool bands. Then I started reading fashion magazines and so I started to only know all the mainstream stuff :-P

Fave bands are random mixes too! Vendetta Red, Billy Talent and Hot Hot Heat are my absolute favorites, Vendetta Red being my favorite but they broke up ages ago so no new music. :( I also listened to Anti Flag, Against Me and The Eyeliners a lot! Now it’s a mix of everything, although I am getting really bored with my iPod so I am looking for great new bands!
