Ombre hair. Does it really need an introduction?
Either way, this hair trend is all over Hollywood so it was about time I’d write about it! Thing is, I actually did some time ago on my post, Two-toned Hair Color – Crazy or Cool?, but it seems it has an official name now. It Girl Alexa Chung started this whole trend some time back and it seems it’s still going strong.
What do you think of the trend? Do you like it or does it look like badly grown out roots to you? I love it on Alexa and Jessica Alba because it’s subtle and blended so perfectly, but Drew Barrymore’s and Ashless Simpson’s look a tad too contrasting for my taste.
Would you ever sport the ombre hair look? I’d totally love to try this trend someday but I just did a two-tone look recently (I dyed the underneath of my hair black, I tweeted a snapshot here). I actually considered dying my tips light blonde before that, but settled with my version of the two-tone hair trend and went with black. I had this ‘look’ when I was 15/16 in high school and I just missed it too much! But I’d love to try this ombre hair trend in the future. Would you?

I love this! If’s it subtle & done right (like Alexa Chung), it adds so much dimension to your hair. I’ve been waiting for my hair to grow out a little so I can try this.
You should try it out! And yeah, get it subtly done like Alexa, she really did hers the best! No wonder everyone started copying
I’d love to try it! I think it’s a great look as long as the colors aren’t too contrasting.

Agreed!
Meh … I’m not crazy about it. When it comes to two-tone hair, my feeling is “go big or go home!” and these all look too in-between to me. It’s hard to tell if it’s intentional or if it’s major root fail.

For some of them, yeah, it looks too much. But for the subtle-looking ones (I know it’s not a word, but you know what I mean, haha) it looks really nice.
I recently dyed the back of my hair brown. I have dark blond hair (dyed) and I wanted to try this trend. I didn’t get a terribly dark brown so it’s very subtle. And I’m thinking almost too subtle. But I did want to be conservative this first attempt.
I like how yours came out.

Alexa Chung has ombre hair so there for I love it! However even is she didn’t I would still love it, I am a proper light blonde so the only way i could achieve this is to die my hair brown which i’m unsure about :/
I have light blonde hair too although my natural colour is darker blonde. I am getting this done tomorrow and went to a few places to get a quote, they all said completely different ways of how they would do it and the prices were about £100-£150. So I thought id ask Tony and Guy how they would do it (as they are normally quite in with the trends) and he said he would just put a dark blonde colour through my roots and gradually blending it into the light sections of my hair. And its only going to cost £39! The others all said they would need to die the whole thing and then do loads of highlights. I’m hoping it will turn out like Whitney’s, finger’s crossed!! xx
how did your hair go? ive been lookng for a hairdressers that will do.I might try tony and guy. did it turn out how you want ? x
Sorry for taking so long to reply I only just saw your comment. Yeh I am really happy with my hair, it looks how I wanted and is so easy to maintain! I would recommend going there as they know the trends and how it should look. x
My favorites: Alexa Chung (I ADORE her hair, omg this hair matches her face perfectly), Whitney Port and Jessica Alba.
3 yrs ago I had balayage all over my hair, I dyed a little bit darker than Jessica Alba. Then I let my hair grow all natural without retouching and I got this look!
I live in a small city so since everybody started doing it I got sick of it. All my cousins and friends started doing again now… also a lot of celebrities are doing too.
My cousin did and she has dark hair like Rachel Bilson, I don´t like this kind of contrast I don´t think it´s pretty at all, Im not even gonna comment on Ashley simpson…
I believe Jessica Alba has never looked that good! I wonder who did her hair, it looks sooo great, the colors are amazing!
I’ve recently been obsessed with dark roots in light blonde hair; but as I don’t want to destroy my hair completely I decided to go with Alexa’s ‘do.

I love this look it screams expensive, I mean how many people could acheive this look at home? I actually have my hair subtly like this because I love it so much, but I couldn’t have acheived it without colour B4 (but that’s another story)
I think you can tell the diference between grown out roots and deliberate trend.
I think this look only looks good if you really look after your hair though!

Ahhhh, no wonder people are asking me were I get my hair done! lol
You see, my hair is dark brown, does not have a thick outer cortex, and is straight (very flat). So, naturally, I want curls. I do hot-rollers in my hair much more often than I should, and without protectant product too :O ouch. Anyhow, over time, my ends have become discolored (although the salt water from the ocean probably doesn’t help either), turning a reddish brown.
So yeah, I won’t trim it all the way off because I LOVE LONG HAIR on women. Which means these “other colored” ends have stayed with me. And who would’ve thought I’d be getting compliments on it lmao!!! Yeah, try it ladies ~ you’d be surprised all the compliments you’ll get
What the heck is this? Those women look like they’re too cheap and lazy to get their roots touched up. Especially the Ashlee Simpson pic. That is hideous. It’s as white trash as looking as blonde hair on top with dark hair underneath. gross.
I’m in love with this trend! I’ve wanted to get it done for a while, and was most inspired by Alexa. I’ve been doing some research, and I found some pictures of a girl with dark brown hair, the same as me, with dip dyed dark purple ends, and it looked amazing!
I have ombre hair, but it didn’t happen on purpose. It’s a combination of salon highlights, salon dye jobs and faded home hair dye… and it looks really good! it took a long time to achieve but it was worth it.
i know this post is old, but i had to comment anyways. i love the ombre look, i’m actually rocking the Rachel Bilson version of this style myself right now for the past couple of months. i love it, it’s so pretty and summer-y, even though i’m pretty sure that i will making it last into fall or later, it’s that cool
I love the ombre look, Im so glad I stumbled on your blog as i didn’t know what it was called! Im going for it, as soon as I get paid from my freelance jobs!! Ive got heavily highlighted hair and Im so sick of having to maintain it all the time, its gone so yellow now and i want a change for winter fingers crossed it goes well…nice blog by the way!
