Soften Annoying Lip Lines When Applying Lipstick

March 4, 2010

You know when you apply lipstick, and sometimes – especially when it’s a bright, bold color like red – the lines on your lips look more accentuated? Lipstick tends to cake into the lines, making it look “clumpy”, and before long you have little flakes of product on your lips. To make the lines on your lips less noticeable, here’s a simple tip you can try.

When applying your lipstick, instead of applying it across your lips horizontally, apply it vertically.

Doing this makes less product cake into the lines of your lips. Instead, it glides right on and doesn’t allow any product to be caught in between those lines.

I’ve tried this myself, especially with red lipstick and it does look more bold on!

What do you think of this lipstick trick? Will you be trying this tip?

i tried this too and it works! i did it when my lips were super dry, cracking and almost wounded, but i needed to put lipstick on…it would also help to not stretch your mouth/lips while appliying lip balm or lip stick

I agree on not stretching out your lips while applying, that helps a lot as well. I;m glad it has worked for you :D

hmmm very interesting…although to tell you the truth never had the problem…i have this habit of putting nightcream on my lips before going to bed…another tip for dry chappy lips is oiling ur belly button. i know it sounds funny but trust me it works.

That’s a good habit, Maria. Your lips must be super soft! :)

You HAVE to tell me more about this belly button tip. How does that work?! I’m so curious, where did you hear it from?

Does it apply as easily doing it this way? For some reason, I can imagine ending up with a lot of product outside of my lip line… Would using a brush help perhaps?
I’m not a habitual lipstick wearer, but I’m planning on buying a few from a drug store formula I liked because I’d like to finally learn to wear lipsticks!

Hey Ashley, it’s quite easy to do, but it takes much longer time. I think a small lip brush would be great, or if you’re like, sometimes I apply it with my fingers. Whatever you do, afterward just gently smack and rub your lips together and it should spread the lipstick nicely. If all else fails, apply a lipliner first, so the lipstick stays where it should! :D

Awesome, thanks! I don’t think I would mind if it took a tad longer, since I would only wear lipstick on occasions when reapplying wouldn’t be necessary.

Brilliant tip! I’ve only just started reading your blog, Renee and it has a great feel about it. Have you tried this with lipstick? If you’re looking to apply it directly from the tube, you may also want to try holding the tube in your hand for a couple of minutes to ‘warm up’ the product, goes on a lot easier and smoother.

Hey Chris, thanks for visiting and your thoughtful comment. :)

Yup, I have tried this out, and it does work! Thanks for the extra tip – it’s true, lipstick is much easier to apply when it’s a little warmed up. :)

Maybe…I’m a weird one of the bunch BUT I love those lines/wrinkles on the lips and NOT around the mouth of course. I feel like it makes pouty or full lips look even sexier, sultry and seductive. On thin or lifeless lips it’s not a good look though because there’s no volume. Look at Angelina, her pouty lips have some lines and wrinkles to it and I jussst love it. I have full pouty lips myself and I crave those lines..[sighs...]
