Tips for Taking Care of Your Acne Prone Skin

August 3, 2010

One of the worse parts of high school for me (apart from, um, everything) was that my skin was a ranging, hormonal mess.

My best friend and I both suffered acne together. Though it was considered mild acne, we were plagued by blemishes, ranging from blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and the occasional painful cystic pimples.

I am extremely glad to report that both of our skin has settled down immensely from our hormonal teenage years, though the practices for clean, clear skin is always on our minds. Even after my skin began to get better, I’ve always tried my best to take care of my skin. I think anyone who has experienced some sort of acne would know how awful it feels, and try their best to prevent it from happening again! Here are some of my tips to keeping your skin in tip top condition and hopefully preventing new breakouts.

Remove all makeup at night.

This is the #1 makeup tip and I really cannot stress it enough: Do. Not. Sleep. With. Your. Makeup. On… EVER! Remember, before bed, remove every trace of makeup and cleanse thoroughly. I do a double-cleanse that I talked about here and would definitely recommend doing that.

Keep hair out of your face.

In my experience, acne and bangs do not go well together. However, you might be a bit lucky. Eitherway, hair can trap a lot of grime, dirt and oil, and it can spread it to your face, causing breakouts. The best advice I can give is to wash your hair regularly, and if you’re hanging out at home, wear hairband to make sure not a single strand of hair is in your face.

Use the correct products.

  • Skincare products: I know what it’s like to go a little overboard with skincare products. For example, I once tried the Proactiv skincare line in hopes that because it was so powerful, my light acne will be banished faster and never come back. Wrong. Proactiv burned my skin, made me breakout even more, and my skin could not tolerate it and all sorts of reactions occurred. Lesson learned: stick to what your skin actually is. Don’t go overboard! If it’s just a little pimple here and there, don’t go overboard with acne washes and medication. For moisturizers, try to find an oil-free, non-comedogenic formula and ones that are marked for acne-prone skin. And yes, even though your skin is still oily, you still need moisturizer!
  • Makeup: For liquid foundation makeup, use non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores) and oil-free products. I would highly recommend mineral makeup, especially in its power form for oily skin. Mineral makeup is amazing for acne-prone skin and gives flawless coverage. (Check out the other pros and cons of mineral makeup here.)

Be gentle on your skin.

Keeping the above tips in mind, when applying these products on your face, be gentle. Aggressive applying of makeup and scrubbing your face can aggravate your breakouts and make them worse. Be gentle by applying light pressure from your fingertips to your skin when rubbing on your skincare products. (Check out my post, How to: Cleanse Your Skin Properly for more tips.) For makeup, keep a light hand when using a brush.

Don’t touch your face!

Whether it’s popping a pimple or leaning your palm on your chin at a boring day of work, do not touch your face. Also, avoid leaning your face on objects where residue lingers, like the window of a bus, or your cellphone. Sebum and residue can spread on your face and cause breakouts.

Keep oily, greasy food to the bare minimum.

Some doctors say food plays a big part in your skin. Some doctors swear that it doesn’t. But judging from our discussion on the topic, it seems like the majority of you (and myself!) find that diet does have a role in your skin. If it’s like that for you, try to keep greasy, nasty, oily fried junk food to a minimum.

Keep it clean.

Pillowcases can cause breakouts, and so can your glasses, sunglasses and makeup brushes. Anything that regularly comes in contact to your face, I would recommend to clean regularly.

I hope these tips have been helpful. These practices have helped my skin drastically and I’d love to hear if they work for you. Do you have any other tips for taking care of acne-prone skin? :)

Strangely enough, I’ve worn my hair with bangs for most of my life and don’t have acne almost ever on my forehead (though I’ve had plenty of breakouts on the rest of my face). I guess I’m lucky! :) I can’t wait until I’m out of my teenage years and hopefully free of acne except for the occasional pimple. I’m going to try these & see if it helps any.

Oh, you’re so lucky! I too am waiting for acne to clear up – I’m 22 soon and I think it’s time! Like you, the occasional ones piss me off the most! :-P

I hope these tips help you out, Michaela! :)

I wish my acne would go away. i’m 22 and i get these horrible break outs on my cheeks[where my palms would rest if i put my hand on my face, but i don't touch my face] and its usually painful white heads, or deep blackheads..how else can get rid of them? i’m cleansing thoroughly, treating, moisturizing, and protecting, but still they’re there! ack!

Great list! It’s just hard for me to not touch my face, it’s the first thing I do when I’m annoyed. I use a one step cleanser called Purity by Philosophy when I’m rushed and need to remove makeup and wash at the same time (though I rarely even wear makeup). And the food thing, I mean, all doctors agree that hormonal fluctuations play a major role in acne, and if certain foods (like dairy, greasy or sugary stuff) mess with your hormones, then food has to has something to do with your skin at least for some people!

Ali your last bit was great about the link between diet, hormones and acne! I def agree, for some it plays a role, for some it doesn’t. Unfortunately I’m one of the unlucky ones! And please try not to touch your face, especially if your skin tends to scar. My best friend can testify that picking at pimples can lead to permanent scarring. :(

Oh, and keeping stress down helps with acne too! Exercising is my favorite way to destress and sweat out some bad stuff (as long as I get to wash afterwards)!

Hi! At first I have to say that I totally admire your website, Renee. I recognized it few days ago, when I was looking for Georgia Jagger photos, because my mom said that I look exactly like her and I had no clue who she is.
Luckliy for me I’ve never had an acne, but I used to read about this skin problem. All that you’ve wrote here is true but I have to add a new one: watch out how do you sleep. If you put head onto your hand or your boyfriend’s chest it abates releasing sweat and close leeks.
I’m so sorry for the mistakes – English is not my first language.

Hey Berry, thanks so much for your comment and your kind words. Your English is perfect! :) Oh, and yes, sleep position plays a part too!

Acne is one of the worst parts of teenagedom >.< It's annoying but I've learnt to not let it ruin my days. I just look after my skin, don't wear heavy make up regularly (I'm more of a eyeliner/lip product person XD) and make sure I'm eating healthily. Now my acne is starting to clear up, as the worst of it has blown over. But along with acne one of the worst things is when people who don't have acne start asking you do you wash your face, and start talking to you about skin products. Not all of us can have perfect skin XD

Yeah, people can be so insensitive. It’s like, well, we didn’t mention about your …. everyone has something about their ‘looks’ have to deal with, it’s life! Just ignore them is the best :D And yeah, acne is the worse. I hate it!!! :(

My skin used to be horrible, but what really helped was going to this local spa and having a mean russian lady do treatments every month for 6 months. I addition to skin-care products she recommended. It was really expensive and painful (felt like my face was burning by some of the treatments) but worth it in the end. :)

I also found that if a pimple really need popping I steam my face with boiling hot water and a towel over my head and use cotton swabs. Less damage to the area.

Now I don’t need a heavy foundation. Just a tinted moisturizer

I was always amazed how cool is Proactiv’s TV ads, and how bad (often) the actual experience is. Quite frankly I didn’t have much success with Clinique either. For long time I used only Aveda wash and lotion – they didn’t do any harm, but didn’t improve the situation either. Recently I started to look into smaller brands, and eventually tried Zap-It! anti-acne line. It looks similar to Proactive, but somehow doesn’t dry the skin, perhaps due to use of tea tree oil. So far so good.

Hey Renee!
I’m 15 and i have Acne, I hate them! :(
i’ve never consulted a doctor about it before, but my mum thinks that by drinking water, your acne will clear (not true at all)
I really dont know wht to do about my face though, all my friends have clear skin, unlike mine and they tell me not to wash my face with soap..

About Acne’s I’m still frustrated about it… I can’t help it when it comes to food as well but I drink a lot of water.. I’m a proactiv user but my pimples keep coming back >.< I guess I should switch to another brand since you mentioned it only burnt your skin more… and I'm experiencing similar issues. The cost of beauty hey……. I don't only have it on my face but I get it on my back as well – worst case is that because I'm still I'm studying I carry a backpack which irritates my back skin more… so I switched to shoulder bags… then my GP also told me heavy weights can dis-align the balance on my spine and cause Lordosis so I should switch back to backpack to balance the weight… So much for health lol

I totally agree with you. It is important to cleanse your face from all the makeup before going to sleep. And in my case, I tend to have breakouts after too much sun exposure or when I’m really stress… So for me, another way to care for my skin is exercise and hydration.

I am in my late 30′s and am still dealing with acne. Hopefully when menopause strikes I won’t have acne and hot flashes.
