Should I Dye My Hair Jet Black?

I got another reader e-mail the other day from S, that asked about hair coloring that could help others wondering the same thing:

Q: I really love the Hollywood trend of dark black hair, like sex symbols Megan Fox and Angelina Jolie, and I would love to dye my hair black. But I am scared – should I dye my hair black? I have quite pale skin, but I really want black hair to suit me!

I do agree that there seems to be a dark hair trend, but if you look closely, these ladies do not have jet black hair – instead, it is a very deep dark brown. I suspect it might have to do with the fact that black is a very permanent color (and you know how those Hollywood ladies change their look a lot!)

For Stef, and another one else considering to dye their hair, there are a few things to consider:

  • Black does not fade – EVER.
  • You can’t color over it if you change your mind.
  • Since you can’t do anything about the color, there will be a long growing out process before you can do anything about the color again.

So think long and hard if you are tempted to get jet black hair. Also, black hair is quite a contrast on fair skin and can wash some people out, which I believe was a concern for Stef, but I have also seen it being done beautifully.

My advice will be dying your hair the darkest brown, like Brown Black from Revlon; it will look black enough, trust me. It is really up to you though, but remember those warnings!

Any dark-haired girls that can help Stef and others who want to go dark out?

  1. This is such a tricky question because it’s really hard to pull off a totally black hair color. You’re so right, most of those women have a very rich, dark brown hues in their hair. Black hair can be gorgeous but it’s a really big decision with no turning back!

Hey Stef, Danielle here…im one of those black haired gals and I just want to say I think it will definatly suit you..but it cant suit everyone..some people look nicer with a lighter shade of black but Im sure it will look gorgeous on you!!!

  3. I dyed my hair black when I was in high school..It was a really bad idea. Now that I want to go back to my natural hair color, I’m obliged to let them grow and it’s not very beautiful, trust me ! Plus, jet black hair tend to make your features seem more “harder”, I think ( i don’t know how to explain what i mean in good english, sorry :/). In a nutshell, if I could have foreseen the future when i was in high school, I would have chosen a dark brown ^^ Or you can choose a faddish color like l’oréal color pulse, to try it without the commitment to keep it :p
(sorry for my comments which are always too long ^^)

    • Thanks for your tips, Krib!

And don’t be silly. I love your comments and appreciate them, they are not long at all! :) I always agree with your comments, and agree about how you said black hair can make your features stand out more and look a but harsh – definitely agree that you should go for a dark brown, sometimes it looks just like black as well :-P

well im thinkiing about dying my hair black and i have light brown hair and everybody is tell me i wuld look better if i died my hair black and i think its a good idea and i want my friend 2 do it cause she dyed her hair blonde and looks amazing wat should i doooo!!!HELP MEE!!!!!!! (^^^)

      • Hey, if you think you’ll like it, go ahead! Just warning you that it will take a loooong time to grow out if you change your mind! It’s really up to you! :D Or you can always try a semi permanent color and see how you like it first?

  4. i’m pale with dyed dark brown hair and used to have black hair, i loved it but i just moved on to other colours, i’m not sure if everyone liked it but i did. i really want it again but i don’t want to be classed as emo! also, i want black hair because then i can get clip in extensions that look real because they are the exact colour and i can’t find any to match my hair colour! confusing i know :P

    • Nah, not confusing, I know what you mean! I’m glad to hear black hair suited you so much and you loved it! I guess to not look ‘emo’ it’s more for the cut – emos tend to have very layered, straightened shirt cuts and side bangs. Haha, I’m not to sure though, it’s your hair. And don’t care what people think of you, let them think you are ‘emo’! :-P

      • yeah,i’m 16 and i dyed my hair black… I guess i’m one of the lucky ones who can pull off the look,my skin in caramel colored, and i’m a natural brunnete…kinda dark colored chocolate brown hair. i wanted to magnifie my features more so i took a risk and dyed it black,it looked GREAT!!! aside from the fact that i ran outta dye cause i have ALOT of hair…and so now i have about 95% black hair and a bit of some sections of brown (but i intend to dye the rest later)… but alot of people didn’t even seem to notice that it was dyed, people assumed it was natural which was GREAT,i suppose cause my natural color looked black in certain lights…but i LOVE it!!! i think people with dark and caramel colored skin like me can pull off black hair cause it looks more natural near our skin tones, plus it brings it out and the eyes too. People with pale or fair skin i would suggest NOT dyeing it black, cause it can bring out their skin tones and make them look even more PALE!!! and you can tell that its FAKE… belive me i know, givin the fact that alot of my teen friends have experimented with it and came out looking like Angelica Houstin in The Adams Family…lOLZ.

        • Actually, there *are* pale skinned people whom *are* naturally raven-haired,an c:d do *not* look fake…also,I’m a natural blonde, very fair skinned, with hazel-green eyes, and have dyed my hair jet black, and people adore me in it…and also “looking paler” is not necessarily a bad thing…not everyone wants to look hard like a man with dark tanned skin *and* dark hair… c:

  5. Even people with naturally black colored hair don’t have really black hair. Actually, black hair on humans doesn’t exist in nature though some people, for lack of knowledge, ignorance or lack of fake jet-black hair to contrast with insist they have black hair. Fair enough, but my point is that jet-black is hard to pull off on anyone for the above reason- even naturally black hair is really just hair that’s so dark brown it appears black; Darker than the shade hairdressers call ‘darkest brown’.

  6. I dyed my hair jet black, because my hair(which was dyed light brown) needed to be prim and proper for school, and the shade of brown of getting lighter and lighter. I went to the hairdresser, instead of using a DIY kit, and asked for black. For a few days it was horrid, but I remember the colour turning into a rather natural black after a few washings. However, a few months down the road, it’s light brown again, and I have no idea why. But I’m glad it did, because I looked disgusting with black hair; looked like one of my old Teresa barbies with her ends chopped off:( UGH.

  7. I would have to say that Megan’s hair is not black. Its really just a dark brown. When I think if black hair, I think of Kat VonD.

  8. I want to dye my hair black
I have blue eyes and pale skin
    Should I dye it?

    • I have the same skin and eye color, and I’m dying mine black in the next few days. Dark hair works on me, so it should look fine.
What color hair do you have now? If it’s dark already then black won’t be such a big step, and less guessing to see if it’ll look nice.

  9. DO NOT COLOR YOUR HAIR BLACK, MY MOTHER WHO IS 61 DOES THIS AND SHE LOOKS VERY STERN AND HARD LOOKING…OTHERWISE KINDA OF UNAPPROACHABLE. WE CALL HER THE BLACK ACE OF SPADES, PEOPLE WITH BLACK HAIR TAKE THE EASY WAY OUT…..IT’S CHEAP AND EASY TO DO AND YOU DONT HAVE TO KEEP GOING TO THE SALON….BUT IT’S MAKES YOU LOOK MEAN AND AND LIKE A WITCH…IT’S A CHEAP COLOR FOR BOTH MEN AND WOMEN TO USE…..I THINK PEOPLE WITH REALLY DARK KOHL BLACK HAIR LOOK FAKE AND KINDA OF MEAN. I DONT LOOK AT THEM AND TRY TO AVOID THEM, BECAUSE THEY LOOK LIKE THEY MAY TELL YOU OFF AT ANY MOMENT, KINDA OF LIKE A CRAZY PERSON…UGH I HATE BLACK HAIR….YUKE YUKE YUKE! BUT IF I GO POOR, I GUESS I HAVE NO CHOICE BUT TO GO BLACK OR GREY. BYE YA ALL! A MISSOURI HAIR STYLIST!

  10. I dyed my hair jet black when I was in the gothic scene and I was 20 years old. Everyone loved it and I always got great attention because I paired it with black and white clothes, red lips and kohl eyeliner. I grew my hair, long and wavy and when I wanted to look softer I did my eyes lavender and purple or gray kohl eyeliner. If you dye your hair Jet Black you can be sure to have it for a very long time. For some reason after a few years I wanted lighter hair again. That’s when it became a problem. No lightener will work without destroying your hair to straw. So the commitment is deep and long lasting. If you want to do a Semi Permanent black that will be way smarter and perfect for your hair. It will still be very black and it will fade out in two or three months. (It is not 28 days like the others). It willnever be blond again but it will fade to a deep reddish or brownish hue. Its a great color but like some people said it can make you look harsher and meaner. And if you are older your wrinkles and pale skin will be magnified. Just do the SEMI permanent and keep using that only on your roots after. One application only….so that one day it will fade and you can do something different if you choose to.

  11. I personally think that if you want to colour your hair black then you should try it, but not without serious thought first — also look at the type of colour. Some blacks have a blue tinge, some are glossy and some have are a jet black and some are more licorice coloured. Also consult your hairdresser — do not try doing this at home on your own because it can go horribly wrong. Good luck!

  12. Thank you for preventing me from lobbying hard for black hair tomorrow at my appointment! I’m still a pretty big noob when it comes to hair color and didn’t realize that black is uber permanent. I still want my dark brown hair to go darker though, so I’ll definitely need to seek the advice of my stylist.

  13. My daughter dyes her hair black. Now she wants it a black/ blue I guess jet black with the blue hues how would I achieve this? Should I do a cocktail bleach first to bring her old color down than put the jet black clor on ?? Not quite sure how to do this

  14. I am a licensed cosmetologist and neither Angelina or Megan are jet black…all hair color fades but if you have previously colored hair/bleached…any color will show up darker..because the hair ahaft is already “open” and will accept color faster/easier….if you do go jet black YOU CAN CHANGE COLOR, with bleach…but that is very damaging..I would suggest to a client a chocolate brown lowlight, then if after adjusting to the change you can proceed with the drastic black

Hi. I used to have jet black hair with a blue tint. I went through a phase of brown with bleach underneath then red all over. Ithen tried to cover.againwoth black but it just keeps going brown? Any ideas? Thanks

  15. I just dyed my hair black today! Love it. I would consider what your skin tone is: obviously, its easier to pull off the darker your natural skin tone is.

ALSO, what are your eyebrows like? People with natural dark eyebrows, and long eyelashes, look better with black hair. If you have have blond or light eyebrows, it will look weird.

The other thing is make-up and what colors you like to wear. If you wear a ton of black, black hair will look goth. Jewel toned clothes like deep greens, purples, and blues look gorgeous on black hair. If you are willing to wear more make-up, it will keep your features from looking washed out on pale skin.

    In summary:
dark eyebrows, long eyelashes, dark skin, like make-up, like jeweltones: do it!
light eyebrows, short/blond eyelashes, pale skin, wear lots of dark colors, dislike makeup: don’t!

  16. i have natural black wavy hair..i wanna change my looks…what should i do?

  17. I had an experience similar to Samantha’s – dyed mid brown highlighted hair black with permanent hair dye, and three months later its all washed out and I’m back to light brown -for some reason red hair dye actually lasts longer on my hair!
