Pigtails on Adults – Crazy or Cool?

April 14, 2010

Hands up who sported pigtails when they were kids? :) Pigtails are synomonious with young kids, probably because it’s so freaking cute. But I wonder, what do you think about pigtails n adults; say, past the age of 12? Is it still cute for you?

I gotta say I’m not loving it on adults, although like many of our “crazy or cool” posts, it’s all about your individual style. (Especially Zooey Deschanel. Can she do no wrong?!) Personally, I would look totally ridiculous and it just reminds me of the playground too much!

Would love to know your thoughts on this: pigtails on adults – crazy or cool? Do you still sport pigtails?

Renee, I think pigtails can only work in a few scenarios. With that said, I wanted to let you know about an Idea I had for a blog post. I am sure you know a lot about this, since you live in Singapore– the obsession with skin lightening. I think it’s really necessary for Asian and Middle Eastern women to be educated about this dangerous craze. Women use lotions and serums to lighten their skin without really fully knowing what they will do. I saw an episode of Jessica Simpson’s new show (which is by the way, being posted on vh1.com), where she traveled to Thailand and covered this epidemic. Anyway, I hope you do it, I think it will be a strong piece.

Hey Fatima, thanks for your comment. I saw that little snippet of Jessica’s new show, about the woman in Thailand. It’s a ver sad story and I will def post it up once I find it on YouTube! I did write a similar post about skintone/colors, called “Embrace Your Shade”, did you see that one? Perhaps we need a followup, eh? Thanks for the idea, I’ll def keep it in mind and post about that soon! :)

hmn well i wear my hair in pigtails pretty much every day because im growing it out, but i think it works with my style. i think fashion is all about contrasts, and so taking a little kid hairdo and making it work with your style as an adult can render awesome results.
on the other hand i am always very inspired by kidswear and the silhoettes in children’s clothing, (probably because im so short, haha), and so i def. like to incorperate a lot of kid-like elements into my style. so maybe its just me.
but anyway i vote COOL. have you seen prada’s spring campaign? the pigtails look great;

Dip, you can make anything look cool ;)

That Prada campaign looks awesome! She looks super cute, and like I said (or did we all say it, haha) if def suits certain people’s style. So pigtails are “in”, again? I just got this idea randomly… Could it be, I am actually in touch with fashion?! :P

I think it´s cute, but i cant do it anymore =/!!! I would look weird! haha

Hey Deb! I too would look weird in pigtails… people would laugh at me! :-P

I loove braids though! It’s a big trend everywhere, you can try to mix it up with braids if you’d like. Hmm… maybe I should do a post on it? ‘Cause there are side braids, mermaid braids, etc, lots of options for us “older”" girls, haha! :D

Pigtails might work really well with a casual look, and they do chime really well with the pastels/nudes look that is so prevalent around now.
I think the secret to making them work for most people is to make sure, like in the bottom two pictures, that some of your hair stays outside the pigtail. Having a fringe, or shorter pieces loose around the face, makes it look carefree and relaxed, like you didn’t even think about it, and gives it a kind of bucolic sexiness. And it’s much more flattering than slicking your hair flat to your head, which only really works if you have killer cheekbones.
If my hair was longer I’d totally give it a try (in the privacy of my home first, methinks.) Especially if I didn’t have enough time to wash it.

I wouldn’t wear that but I think some people can pull it off ^^

This look is far from crazy. But i agree only some people can pull it off without looking about 5 1/2! Personally i know for a fact that this look is hard to pull off any style tips?

Well I think they are cool to wear them sometimes. I used to wear my hair like in this in the summer when I went to the beach. Anyway I would not recommend this style to everyone because if you look more adult it will not be a good idea to try it :)

if the pigtails are low (ie below the ears) then it can look pretty cute on adults too. Have them a bit messy and the boys will love you. Men seem to have a thing for the school girl look. Don’t put them up high like in the top left photo. That’s definitely better on the kids.

I think they only look good on certain people, like you said, Zooey Deschanel can do no wrong. I wear them a lot for work, simply because I work with food and have to wear a hat– and if I wear a ponytail with a baseball cap, I look like a 12 year old boy. I would never rock pigtails in any other situation though.
