An Afternoon at Phillip Wain

Phillip Wain describes themselves as a “women’s haven” and I cannot agree more. Spending an afternoon there a few weeks ago was nothing but a pleasure – and I could’ve easily spent the whole day. A women’s beauty and fitness club, the center has a wide range of things to do concerning getting fit, getting beautiful and getting pampered. Let’s take a tour of the place, shall we?

Phillip Wain Singapore

Welcome to Phillip Wain…

Situated on Level 4 of United Square, upon entering Phillip Wain, you are greeted with smiles at the front desk and immediate attention – there are consultation rooms to the left of the reception, where Phillip Wain uses a unique health Quotient System to assess your overall state of health and being.

From there, they are able to customize a program for you that will fit your needs and help you achieve your health and fitness goals. I went to try out two services of theirs; a RIPPED fitness class, which I am told is nothing but intense, and after, a relaxing facial. But a little more of that later.

The Gym

Going through the large center, after the reception, to your right is the gym, where female personal trainers are on hand to help you out. (I’ll definitely be going there again to be taught how to use gym equipment properly!) This is where the trainers can give you a comprehensive physical assessment and recommend what fitness and/or training regime is good for you.

To the right of the gym are tables and chairs for eating, because right down the corner is their Juice Bar, where nutrition is #1 for Phillip Wain. The Juice Bar not only offers juice (obviously) but also healthy balanced meals, and you know, a place to just chill and relax.

Right next to the Juice Bar, if you feel like shopping, is a mini shopping palace! You can get everything from skincare brands to workout outfits – you name it. They house lots of exclusive skincare brands such as Infusens, Transvital, plus well-known brands such as Decleor, La Colline and much more.

The Fitness / Dance Hall

And then, we come to the main fitness hall – big and roomy! Here they hold a large variety of fitness classes, ranging from Dance MTV, Zumba, Yoga & Pilates, Kickboxing, Salsa, and MUCH more.

The RIPPED Class

I was there for the class RIPPED, which they said was “a total body plateau proof fitness formula” workout, utilizing resistance and cardio training, and boy were they not kidding! This class was intense guys, and unfortunately I lasted 53 mins before I had to walk out (it was an hour class). I was lucky enough to attend that class because on that day Christian Salazar was teaching – and he is the only RIPPED instructor in Asia, and Phillip Wain is hoping to include this to their regular schedule. It was a lot of fun – intense but a lot of fun – and though I am not fit at all and haven’t properly exercised like that in years (I think the last time I was in middle school?!) I didn’t feel sore or ridiculously fatigue the next day. Though it was tough – imagine martial art kicks, push ups, dance moves with no rest – I was really happy the next day, I felt like perhaps (!!!) I am on the way to becoming fit, ha!

After the fitness class, I was taken to the powder room, where – wow. Granted, I have not seen many powder rooms – unless the one in school counts, and of course, movies) but the one here is fantastic! It is extremely cozy and very private and includes areas of lockers, heated showers, a vanity area and even a sauna and steam room! Everyone was super nice and I even got talking to some of the ladies around there, and I really loved that everyone was so casual. I even spotted an area of lounge chairs where I saw a lady relaxing in a bathrobe and headphones – I know I’ll definitely be there next time! The powder room is an excellent place to relax and cool down too.

… And now for the beauty talk!

I really enjoyed myself at the fitness class, but next it was time for a relaxing facial. Before I went for my facial, a therapist gave me a mini tour of the beauty section of the club, which I was surprised was so quiet! The fitness hall was just around the corner (and you can imagine all the loud dance music going on!) but the beauty area was quiet and peaceful.

Each door had a scent on it which was really cute! The beauty section of Phillip Wain offers everything from slimming treatments (like deep tissue massages), massages and facials. I was even told there was a chocolate and wine massage, yum! Other treatments included Swedish massages, Laser therapy, you name it. I was there for a facial though, and because I have very sensitive skin, I was recommended to try the Nano Hydration Calming Facial.

Nano Hydration Calming Facial

The Nano Hydration Calming Facial uses products that is sold exclusively to Phillip Wain, and harnessed the power of Grape Seed Extract. I have been hearing a lot about grape seed (and with all the new products with the “power of grapes”), so I was really excited to try it out.

Basically, grape seed extract is a natural plant constituent that strengthens and protects the cell membranes from oxidative damage caused by free radicals. Not only that, it also helps reduce allergic responses, which is great for me because my darn skin is sensitive and allergic to everything! And another really cool thing about Grape Seed Extract – it is 50 times stronger than Vitamin E and 20 times stronger than Vitamin C: yes! It is anti-allergic, anti-histamin, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant. This little power ingredient strengthens blood vessels, improves the complexion and aids in circulation that can prevent and treat problems such as varicose veins, cardiovascular disease, water retention, collagen damage and even arthritis!

During the facial, Nano-mist and LED (Light Emitting Diodes) blue light therapy was used to help break down the large water molecules for much, much, better absorption for the skin. This also helps to calm and soothe tired and stressed skin.

My favorite part during the facial was the thick, icy cold mask that the therapist applied for me. At first I was thinking, Oh no, this is gonna be really hard to remove, because it was SO goopy and thick, but 25 minutes later, when the therapist entered my room again, she just peeled it off and my skin was like brand new! I couldn’t believe there was no residue what so ever and my skin looked like I had some years taken off it – nice and plump looking. :) The whole time the therapist was very accommodating to me (“don’t go anywhere near my eyes please, very sensitive”, “can I move around a bit I can’t sit still”) and she was very nice.

Which was better?

I can’t really say which I enjoyed more – the fitness or the facial, but I really enjoyed my time at Phillip Wain. So much so I am definitely going back! more for the fitness classes as you shouldn’t do facials so often, (but I was told with this one, every 10-14 days is ideal) but I’ll most definitely be back. What I love the most about Phillip Wain is that it is a cozy, down to Earth place. It is non-intimidating, it is all-women, and it’s tucked away in such a nice area.
