New Hair!

This is a totally pointless post, but what the heck. I would like to introduce to you my new hairstyle. I still want another perm (sigh, I never learn, but I still want waves) and then I think it’ll be ‘complete’. But before that, let me show you my cut; which was total spontaneous, and a proper pic of my two-tone look I sported in high school that I did again because I missed it too much.

Anyway – here’s my new cut! My hair was under my chest before because I don’t remember the last time I cut it. Now, it’s about 3 inches below my collar bones – it’s that in-between length of longer than shoulder length, but nowhere near long. In these pictures I think my hair has grown almost 2 inches (this is a very late post!), so it was a bit shorter than this.

Anyway, I was at lunch with my friends and suddenly told them I was over long hair and felt like cutting it really short. All the girls said yes, and the guys, naturally said no. Because you know, men tend to like longer hair on women. (Whatever). So after lunch I just went to my neighborhood hairdresser and asked her to snip it half off. I also gave her two sections on the front and asked her to snip them off at different lengths, so I have semi-layers (all 2 strands of them) in the front.

(By the way, those with thin hair – DON’T get layers. I know everyone says that layers are the way to go to create volume, but as far as I know it’s all bull. I got layers done my whole life because of what I heard, and it always looked worse and made me look like I had no hair ’cause it was thinned out so much. When I have this straight, blunt cut, my hair looks so much thicker and fuller – blunt cuts are the way to go if you have thin hair!)

And as you can see, I also have two-toned hair. I adore it, but it doesn’t really show up because my hair is dark brown (I think the lighting in these pics make it look a little lighter brown than it really is). In high school I had this nasty dyed reddish brown hair so the black really stood out against it, but I like it now ’cause it’s very subtle.

Alright, that’s enough narcissism for the year. What do you think of my hair? I think it really suits me and my style! (Whatever style I have!) I just really, really love it: Finally I love my hair and am not wondering what to do next.

Have you done anything with your hair lately? :)

It’s all about experimenting, Steph! Took me years of all sorts of atrocious styles to come to this one!

OMG I love this hairstyle! Reminds me of Alexa Chung’s bedhead hairstyle :) How do you get the tousled waves? Is it from the digital perm you had?

And I had layers in my hair for YEARS before realising it did absolutely nothing for my limp hair. I got myself a blunt cut recently and it looks so much better. As with you (and probably every other girl with limp hair out there) I wanna get a perm too! But I’m too worried about hair damage so I usually just bun up my hair for a few hours and then let it loose :)

Hey Ri! I actually cut of the last of the perm but there might be a little bit left, so that might explain the little tousles – but I think it’s more the cut and my hair texture right now!

Perms are very damaging, but I think if you get it once WELL, and then don’t touch your hair with anything else (styling, dyes, etc) then I think it’s fine. But a perm with dyed hair, split ends, already damaged hair is a big no-no!

Ah, two-toned hair. I’ve alwas been fascinated by it (and recently even more with Alexa having the brown-blonde thing going on), but where I live, girls who have it all look tacky … which has made me refrain from doing anything that looks like it to my hair. It looks good on you though!
And indeed, layers are good if you have THICK hair, not thin. I myself have thick hair and layers suit me the best, otherwise I have this “christmas tree”-hair, as my hairdresser called it.

I love two-toned hair when it’s subtle – and like you said, it can cross over to the line of ‘tacky’ easily. Hopefully mine is well away from the tacky line!

And yes, I think they should be saying layers are good for people with thick hair, not thin! It really looks much better on people who are already blessed with a lot of hair and can afford for it to be thinned out a bit.

That’s an amazing cut. And you’re so right about blunt ends being better for thin hair. I have insanely thin hair and I never get layers. Anyway, loving the new do.

P.s. thanks for the post on Gravatars. I’ve always know about them but have never motivated myself into getting so, but now i have have, so hopefully it works.

You look great Renee! And I can’t agree more about not layering for thin hair. I’ve had pple telling me the same thing – layer for volume – but we know it’s not true.

Renee October 25, 2010 at 14:11

Thank you, Sesame. And yes, how dumb to say layers create volume – quite the opposite!

Samantha October 24, 2010 at 11:18

I think it really suits you too Renee and you really pretty! You have a long face shape so you can afford to have shorter hairstyles ;) The two-toned colours are really nice also – natural and subtle.
My hair has always just been layered and long as it is quite thick and I’ve dyed it a couple of times to a lighter brown but its completely grown out and could almost be like the ‘ombre’ trend that’s going around. Am not sure what to do next though.. something I will think about once I finish my final exams for the year :)

Thank you, Samantha! I do think shorter styles suit me ’cause like you said, I do have a long face! :)

And that’s so awesome how you have the ombre hair trend without realizing it, I would really love to try that next! :-P

Thanks Emma! :) Aw Banada’s are awesome for bad hair days… and you’re lucky you get frizz, at least it creates volume, haha! My hair is flat as hell -_-

Hiii Renee!!!! I looove your hair! And you’re right about the layers, I’ve been cuting my hair in layers for yeaaars to reduce volume =)! My cousin cuts her own hair, she has twice more hair than I (believe I have a lot), and so she cuts that way and looks like she actually has way less hair, reduces the volume a lot. And i remember once u said that u dont have enough volume, but u do!!!!! And u are never gonna give up the perm are u?haha, u look great, ur hair has movement, beautiful haircut, approved!

I think guys like long hair because when we say we are going to cut it off, in their minds, they have that imagine of britney spears and how bad she got after she shaved her head.

i love your … “waves” (if that’s what ya’ call it) i always wanted something like that because i’ve got irregular good hair days, sometimes straight, sometimes curl *pisses me off*

i did a digital perm and i look like i’m in my 30s (I’m only 23)! So, what did ya’ tell your stylist to get this perm/wave? Don’t wanna end up getting my hair all curled and dry for nothing =(

Reply

Renee November 21, 2010 at 21:54

I didn’t actually… I went to a bad stylist and they hardly gave me curls, so I ended up with what you see in the picture… hardly anything :( I wanted really big waves, boo! Can read more about it here: http://beautyfool.com/digital-perm-hair-review/

Just tell your stylist you want waves rather than curls, and show them a picture of what you want and DON’T want – pictures speak a thousand words! :)

O love two toned! I have two toned :] My hair is (dyed) natural red with a lighter almost blonde yet still red tinted bottom half :] I love it. Kindof like haily williams! Haha. I have layers, but have REALLY thick hair so it makes it poofy D: And really annoying to straighten too (I have very poofy wavy hair when it’s natural) because I go and straighten all of the bottom and middle halves then I get to the top (neivly) thinking I have only a small portion left and get and very very thick wad of hair that takes FOREVER to straighten. Oh I’m complaining. I do love my hair :] Haha. And I love yours as well Renee :D
