I was actually disappointed as well with Lancôme's Virtuose. Initally I had the same "problem" as Laura, and the mascara actually uncurled my lashes, even after using a warm curler.
After leaving it for about 5 months (yes, I know, you should probably throw out your mascara after 3 months, so shame on me... ), I tried it again today after reading your review. And actually, after it's been "dried" up, it worked pretty well. I guess it was too wet initially for my short, asian, straight lashes, so it heavied them down. I wouldn't recommend too many layers though, since it's a bit dry.

But a mascara I'm really happy with is Heroine make's long&curl mascara. It also has a gentle and genius remover, so you'll avoid the rubbing on the lashes when you remove the mascara. I found a review of it here:

the only thing is that the mascara is very wet right after applying, so it's easy to smudge on the upper eye lid.

Hey Erika,
I actually do have the Shu Uemura curler! It was the first one I bought so I don't have any to compare it to, but I def think you are right - doesn't pull out your lashes at all and it's so easy to use. Unfortunately my lashes just don't hold a curl too well, though Virtuose has def helped a lot. :(

If you're having trouble curling your lashes, try the Shu Uemura line of curlers. They have a silicone strip versus the usual rubber one so it doesn't "yank" out your lashes. It's the best thing for curling lashes, under any mascara you like for length or volume.
