Keep Your Hands and Nails Safe from Cleaning Agents

March 11, 2010

For those of us who has chores to do – or worse, clean a whole house! – try to get into the habit of wearing gloves.

Why? Cleaning agents are extremely harsh for our hands and our nails. Nails actually swell slightly when they are wet, and then shrink back to size once dry. Couple this with harsh detergents, this can cause brittle and broken nails. Also – I don’t think I need to mention how dry and scaly our hands feel after washing the dishes!

Even better, when wearing rubber gloves while cleaning, moisturize your hands fully with hand lotion and then slip on the gloves – you can give yourself a moisturizing hand mask while you’re at it!

What do you think of this tip? Will you be trying it out?

Ohh i already know this tip for a while! My nails chip all the time, so a looong time ago i started wearing cloves to do everything in the house. It´s better bc my hands dont get dry anymore! My nails keep chipping, but my nailpolish lasts longer!!
It´s great!
Everybody should try!!!

This is what I already do, because I hate touching dirthy dishes or detergents with my bare hands ;p

Yes, that’s a good reason too! Protect your hands :D

I know full well that I should do this, yet I never do. It’s terrible. I have to put rubber gloves on my shopping list now!

Please do! :D I promise it would help and your hands will be much less dryer, detergents dry out your hands like crazy!

i’ve been wearing rubber gloves to do most household chores simply because I’m allergic to all kinds of detergents. My nails and hands still suffer though, so great tip about moisturising my hands then slipping on the gloves! Will do that right away!!!!

i guess the easiest way is to use eco friendly cleaning products which usually do not contain harsh chemicals.

That’s a good idea, Jessica! :D Still, over-washing can dry out your hands a lot so I’ll still rec gloves, even though eco friendly products are def much, much better. Thanks for your great suggestion!

rubber gloves are the best thing! the only problem is.. really sweaty hands if you’re wearing them for a long time!!

I spend about 1.5hrs washing & waxing my van, usually my nails become so terrible and weak after touching all the soaps.. but i tried using gloves a few days ago and my nails remained intact!

I’ll skip the moisturisers..too hot and humid here for yucky hands! save it for when you’re sleeping

That’s so great, Jo! I’m glad your nails are intact again and this tip worked for you! :D

I understand about it being hot and humid, just skip it til night when it’s a little cooler! :)

I did this today. It was bathroom cleaning day, which in my house is quite a chore. We’ve got four and I had to do everything, showers, mopping, etc to the nth degree as we are expecting company. My hands feel nice now…not dry and flaky, though they aren’t as silky as I’d hoped, after slathering on lotion and then applying the gloves for about an hour, but definitely a habit I’ll develop and continue to avoid wreaking havoc on my skin! Thanks.

I tried this tip out as the nails on my thumbs are always breaking about half way down and I’ve never figured out why, but yikes! It’s annoying! Since your tip I’ve been wearing rubber gloves for everything (well.. ok, maybe not everything, but for all washing up and cleaning duties)!! It’s now a month and a half on I have lovely unbroken nails.. First time probably since I started washing up / cleaning (which is a few years)!! Wooohooo! So yes, def a success story and rubber gloves officially rock!! Thanks so much for this great tip :D D xx
