How to Grow Out Your Bangs

June 23, 2008

Earlier this year in January, my best friend and I were chatting on web cam (she’s in London for college) when we decided right then and there that we had to get bangs.

We obviously need to find better things to do online, because she started cutting her hair in front of me, (that daredevil) while I watched in horror. In the end, however, it turned out really well. So well that the next day I rushed to my beloved hairdresser and asked for bangs; I couldn’t wait!

While my friend loved hers, I loved mine for about 3 hours and then got over it – I realized that it looked very weird with my face shape, so I wanted to grow them out as soon as possible.

Along the way, I read countless ‘tips’ on how to grow them out, but these are the only ones that I found useful:

Hair Accessories. Luckily for me, I usually tie/clip my hair up 95% of the time, so the bangs didn’t bother me as much as it would for some. Try wearing hair bands, head scarves, bobby pins, fancy clips with butterflies on them, whatever floats your boat! Experiment to see what suits you.

Get a haircut. Once your bangs/fringe has gone past your eyebrows, go to your hairstylist and ask her to cut it into a side fringe, so that it’s easier to grow out and will blend easier into your hairstyle. Plus, once it’s grown out even more, you can always sweep it behind your ear. You can see what I mean with this photo of Jessica Alba – her bangs have grown out a little bit, and now she is parting her bangs in the center and blow-drying them to the opposite sides. After somemore time, it will slowly grow out, where she can get a trim and some layers to blend in her grown out bangs.

Time. I hate to say it, but I read tons of ‘ways’ to grow them out, from taking hair supplements, standing upside down few times a day (seriously!), etc, and to be honest, I don’t see how that would speed up hair growth. Bangs/fringes take a full 6 months to grow out, so be patient, and focus on something else!

That’s my advice on growing your bangs out. I think bangs done right are really stylish and fashionable, but I’ve learnt my lesson – they are not for me!

Does anyone else have any tips on growing out bangs?

just to share, I am a “bangs” girl, i sported bangs as long as I remember, all I can say is i tried growing out my bangs by using hair accessories and head bands :) but at the end, doesn’t fit my face shape, so I had fringes again! lol

Bobby pins are a godsend! Simple and unobtrustive. Thankfully now coming in a range of colors- white, silver etc not just the simple brown, gold and black. Now not only are they practial and no longer are they the equivalent of the flesh tone bra for the hair they are now very much in fashion.

I have bangs that I am trying to grow out. Right know i am braiding it back. It looks effortless and pretty in this style. Alternatively I part my hair in the middle and leave the fringe half on either sides.

Check out the following links for examples of these hair styles: http://www.celebritystyleguide.com/?op=item&sid=22&cid=108&page=5&item=5930

Oh Christine, that’s a good one – braiding it into your hairstyle is a great idea. Never thought of it, thanks a lot! :)

I have a terrible haircut right now, the bigest problem is that i used to have a lot of bangs and i decided to grow the sides and they are just below my ears and they tend to roll so they look like ears… i dont know what to do because all of my hair is heavily layered and fine, i want a blunt cut but because of those “ears” i cant do it and i have a long neck so i think i will take a year until i can cut my hair, ive been waiting for six months and i feel terrible since that horrible hair suicide

I just got bangs but the lady who cut my hair started my bang line in thw middle of my head. I have been using clips to pin some back. I dont know what to do. Should I go back to the place and show them how bad,it looks ?

go on taaz.com and upload a picture of yourself with your hair pulled back. then follow instructions. otherwise, id say u shud ask em 2 do the fringe to youre eyebrows, then look in the mirror, and if you like it tell them to then cut in to your desired length. if you dont like it at least it wont take as long to grow back!
