How to: Get Motivation and Start Exercising

November 12, 2009

Ah, exercise, my least favorite thing to do in the world, after eating vegetables. I’m gotta get a lot of laughs from my family and friends on this topic – seeing as I am LAZY. What really disgusts me is that I used to play sports and run track – in middleschool for gym class we would run around the school four times, and it was no problem for me! Ah, to be young again….

Regardless, I have been trying to clean up my act by getting more vegetables and fruits in my system, and now by moving my butt. Since I’m an ‘expert’ in all things lazy, I feel I have enough knowledge to write about this topic – because if I can get off my butt and start exercising, so can you!

1. Set a realistic goal. It would be very nice claiming you will swim the Atlantic ocean this year, however, setting ridiculous and large goals can leave you even more unmotivated! Not only that – imagine how bummed and burnt out you’ll feel when you can’t accomplish it! Try to set smaller, short term goals for now. For example, I have made it a point to take a nice 30 minute walk around my neighborhood every night. It’s a very small start, but, it’s doable! (Not to mention it’s a great stress-buster.)

2. Grab a companion. I really missed the days when my best friend lived across the road, because we used to be so active together: swim, the gym, walking our dogs, everything. Now that she’s moved half way across the world (sob) it seems reeeeeally boring doing all those things alone. So my advice is to do it with a friend! Take a class up together or enjoy some long walks or a nice swim together. Other companions could be your music, a podcast, your dog, etc.

And while we’re on the topic of a companion – upbeat music is a great one. I remember slaving away in the gym one day completely bored out of my mind – the TV wasn’t on and there was no music. Only glum faces all around me … how miserable! If you’re at a gym, don’t be afraid to turn on their TV or their stereo. And if you’re doing your own thing, bring your iPod.

3. Announce it. I find when you announce something to many people, you’re more likely to do it, since they may check up on you and ask how it’s going. How embarrassing, saying you’re going to run a marathon and then don’t bother to do it after! Say, “boyfriend, I’m going for a jog”, “Mom, I’m gonna take Spot for a walk”. You’ll find you will actually do it after saying it out loud as well.

4. Keep it fun! Running on a treadmill for 3 hours doesn’t seem like a lot of fun to me. There are plenty of activties to do that get you moving and are fun; here are some suggestions that even a lazy bum like me likes:

  • cycling
  • “long walks on the beach” ha!
  • badminton
  • hockey
  • swimming
  • Pilates

5. Keep an exercise log. Keeping a short list of what you’ve done and dates of when you last exercised will be a great motivator. I remember keeping one for awhile and looking back and seeing that I had done Pilates, swimming, and walked a few kilometers all in one week (hey, this is a A LOT for me) and I instantly felt good. An exercise log can also help you remember what days you’ve exercised, or when you need to next – not too frequent though, you don’t want to overdo it!

6. Reward yourself. Ah, the greatest motivator in life – something you want, pronto! Whether it’s telling yourself that after the gym you are going to treat yourself with a good foot massage, a new magazine, Ben& Jerry’s Cookie Dough (that would be me), you’d find that you’d be more than willing to do whatever is set in front of you.

If you can’t reward yourself, create anticipation. (Or if you’re like me, do both!) Go to the gym before a hot date. Go to the gym before meeting a friend you haven’t seen in a while. Go to the gym before a dinner party. Then tell yourself, “right, after this you get to see Johnny!”, “after this you can go to Sarah’s birthday party, how fun!” This should keep you going.

7. Remember why you’re doing this. Exercising is not to fit into a smaller jean size or trying to impress a man you like. It’s about you - you being healthy and happy. Not only will you look good, you’ll feel great and are preventing a lot of diseases to your body. As you feel yourself getting fitter and stronger, record it. A simple note on your fridge will be a constant reminder to the get thing you are doing to your body and spirit – exercising releases endorphins, the ‘happy’ chemicals in your brain. That’s why you feel so great after a good run!

I hope some of my tips have inspired some motivation to start getting fit yourself. Do let me know if you have any tips to add. And do share - are you currently doing some form of exercise? If so, what are you doing? I’d love to hear.

Hey renee!
Amazingly its a another cool post! Seriously, I like the motivational way you mentioned e.g. Set a realistic goal etc…

Like most people say “exercising is to burn body fats”, thats true! But what about being lazy?! I would say, Let’s start to burn out the lazy fats, and get fit and healthy! :D Why don’t you try doing some simple exercising? And post it here, I bet most your friends will be motivate of your doing tho.

Ohh yea, exercising is not just that. Layout a schedule/routine for you to do. Like for me, my schedule is like nonconsecutive days per week(Monday,Tuesday and Friday). What I did is simple, workout and jogging(at least 4km). And diet is important too! Well, I’m still slim! Have to gain more weight! hahahaa!

Cheers! All the best for your workout! I would motivate you not to exercise BUT burn your LAZY fats!

ps: I’m running tom evening, if you would like to join me, text me!:D

Have fun! ;)

Haha burning my lazy fat. Yes, please! And yep – a schedule def helps too, as well as friends encouragement. That’s why I think the best thing is to grab a companion, you can encourage and push each other.

And thanks for your encouraging comment! :)

Hahahha Dip you sound just like me. That was my exucse “I try. I really do.” Haha. But I’d always have times of exercising and doing well, and then I’d go back to my ways. That’s why I said to keep it fun – like your dance class, that is def something and that’s great! What kind of dance is that? :)

Wow, I think that such topic couldn’t have such perfect timing! I just started exercising yesterday! Yep, 1 whole hour on the bike! So proud of me!! I’m really lazy when it comes to working out! Hey, girls, what are the songs in your playlist? I need to refresh mine, it sooooo old!!!!!

ruth November 12, 2009 at 14:42

Hey Lorlori,

Catchy club tunes keep it going!!! No slow songs or you will fall asleep!!! Haha.

Rhianna, Beyonce, Justin Timberlake, Kanye are good. :) Catchy tunes that make you feel the beat as you run. Positive songs too, dance club anthems are great as well!!! What is on your playlist for now?

Hey Lorlori!

One whole hour; congrats! I’m really glad you are starting to get healthy and really happy to hear you found this post useful!

Hm… music. I listen to really diverse music – if it isn’t loud then it’s really slow and emo/spiritual/soft music haha. I think what Ruth said is great – dance tracks and upbeat music would really help! What you could do is get a Top 40 CD (or the radio, though I hate the ads! :( ) with all the catchiest new music that you move to!

Do you use iTunes? You can make your own playlists and call it “Gym” or something and just add tons of upbeat, fast music.

Some “upbeat” music to add to Ruth’s list: How about Gwen Stefani, Katy Perry, Green Day, Mika … I hope that helped! :D

Hey Renee!

I liked this post. It can be hard to stop being lazy. I haven’t gone to gym at all this week.
It’s indeed more fun to exercise with a friend. When I’m in Singapore we can go jogging ;)
The benefits of exercise are huge: Sexy body, healthy, more energy.

Have a beautiful day! :)

“Power-walking” would be way easier, I cannot do jogging quite yet. Which sucks ’cause when I was younger I did it all. Sigh.

And you’re on! Remind me :-P

Hi Renee! It’s really a great post. I’m so lazy most of the times when i have to exercise, but making exercises with a friend always helps, at least to get in the mood :)

Playing Wii! It really does help. I got aches all over from exercising to Wii Fit, boxing, running, yoga…

Firstly, you dun have to change out of bed wear etc
Secondly, don’t have to worry about your after exercise look
Lastly, it is more fun and interactive than jogging alone etc.

Also, there is a section to keep track of your activites and weight!

Ahhh Janis that sounds so good. The thing with me is that I live so far away from anything, it’s 1 hour travel to Pilates, a walk to the gym, etc. Wii sounds AWESOME; especially in the comfort of your own home and in your pajamas. Perhaps when I get enough $$$ I can get myself a set! :)

Great post, especially for this time of the year, lots of parties and overeating. What can I say about exercising? How about housework fascinates me because I can stare at it for hours!!! Haha. I am LAZY. The only exercise I do is reaching for the remote control to switch channels on the telly!!!

Renee November 12, 2009 at 20:07

Hehe you sound a little like me … start slowly by taking walks? Helps a lot!

This is a great post, thanks. I should start exercising again but I’m so lazy I keep postponing it. I know, I’m so bad! I think I should find a companion, it’d be more fun that way. And I agree on the upbeat music. I can’t work out listening to slow music or I fall asleep lol.

Renee November 14, 2009 at 16:16

Haha, you sound like me! It’s worth a try though, and yes, companion def helps – a friend who’s a personal trainer really helps too. LOL :-P

Kaye November 13, 2009 at 10:17

I hear ya. The only exercise I do these days is when I have to get up and change channels manually when I can’t find the remote :(

Reply

Renee November 14, 2009 at 16:03

LOL Kaye. I’m just like you. Or rather, in front of the computer blogging and snacking haha. Try it though – every little bit helps! Start slow :)

just when i thought skipping meals will be the only thing that would get me my pre-body back…(i know, i know, it’s not scientifically helpful, but it works for me to some extent!) i’ll try these! :)

Renee November 14, 2009 at 16:17

Nooo don’t skip meals! Food is too good to miss :)

Do try! You can bring your daughter too for walks, let her observe the world while you get fit! :-P

Well since you ask I like to do strength training with dumbbells.
I have some pretty vinyl coated ones & it’s true about those endorphins, exercise does make me feel good, that’s a good motivation.
