How To Find Your Skin Type

Determining your skin type is especially important when you get to that age of using skin care products to treat whatever issues you have! This normally starts right when you hit your teens. Here are some characteristics of the different skin types to figure yours out.

Normal skin:

  • an even complexion
  • pores that are normal sized
  • skin with very few lines or wrinkles

Your goal: Lucky you! All you need to do is maintain and protect.

Oily skin:

  • all over shine
  • pores that are medium to large
  • acne-prone skin – blemishes, whiteheads, blackheads, pimples

Your goal: Minimize shine, control breakouts, moisturize and protect.

Combination skin:

  • oily in the t-zone
  • dry in cheeks
  • basically, your skin seems to be a combination of dry/oily in different places

Your goal: Control shine, normalize skin, treat and protect.

Sensitive skin:

  • Thin, delicate skin
  • Flushes easily
  • Prone to broken capillaries
  • Frequently Allergic
  • Rashes/peeling skin

Your goal: Treat, moisturize, protect.

Dry Skin:

  • fine, almost invisible pores
  • skin that feels dry and tight
  • cheeks are flaky and dry
  • visible lines and wrinkles around the eyes and mouth

Your goal: Hydrate and moisturize, treat, then protect.

What’s your skin type? Has your skin type changed as you enter different stages in your life?

Hi Renee! I enjoy reading your blog, I seem to learn something new all the time. This is definitely helpful especially after this summer. I just got back from 4 days of camping in the sun and I’m definitely tanned. My color of my foundation doesn’t look good on me and my face is not looking very fresh…I’m in desperate need of a makeover, any advice?

Hey Mary. Welcome back! Hope you had a good time at camp :)

The skin isn’t as “fresh” after a tan because as we all know, the sun is very bad for the skin! No worries though – in terms of your foundation, once your tan goes, your foundation will suit you again. In the meantime, when you go out, please apply sunscreen!

In the meantime, do moisturize your skin as much as possible; the sun damages and ages the skin greatly that may include sun spots, wrinkles and fine lines. So definitely moisturize regularly in this time to “make up” for the times in the sun!

As far as not looking fresh: wait until your tan goes, moisturize, wear sunscreen, get lots of beauty sleep, and to ‘fake’ it in the meantime, try a nice light colored blush to wake your skin up. :)

Hope I helped! If you have anymore questions feel free to ask Mary :)

The best advice was “moisturize your skin as much as possible”…I can already see the improvement and I’ve also been drinking lots and lots of water! Thanks again!!

Omg… I completely forgot about water, oops! And it’s the most important! :-O

Glad to hear you’re seeing improvements, though. Keep it up! :)

hi,
i just read your post on skin types, and I still have no idea what skin type mine is. >..> sometimes i think i have combination skin, sometimes i think i have oily skin. Most of the pimples and blackheads i have is on my T-zone, and my cheeks has the few pimples here and there, but my cheeks do not feel very dry. Also clean and clear leaves my skin really squeaky dry, and i’m now using vichy 3-in-1 cleanser but my pimples are still there. Any advice?

I’m still not 100% on my skin type..most of my whiteheads[and *gasp* cystic pimples] occur just above and just below my jawline[could my pillow case be causing this problem?] my nose and cheeks[just under my eyes] are scattered in blackhead ridden pores[medium-ish pores, but i can see the gunk in them!! yuck!] my face only gets dry if i over cleanse, or if i squeeze a pimpe[i KNOW!! you aren't supposed to, but I do, I can't help it!!] and pick at the scab, then the skin immediately surrounding flakes a tad bit and I want to pull it off! Other then that, my skin is moderately oily, uneven complexion[yay for suffering from acne since i was 13, i'm now 22.] and not really sensitive[only when i try a new product that has a higher % of a specific active ingredient]

As for cleansers, if I go to Sephora, will someone be able to recommend products to properly cleans, treat, moisturize and protect? The last time i went, the gal gave me Cliniques 3 step cleansing system and it didn’t help at all! I’ve even tried Proactive but had the same results as you:/ any help would be fantastic! i’m so sick of dealing w/ acne!!

It’s helpful, thanks for sharing this – I’m 22 and I’m still prone to skin breakouts =( I’m switching from ProActiv to Dermalogica to see if it’s going to heal. I really want a clear face.
