In the January 2009 issue of Glamour, they had a very interesting article about blush, (‘New Tips for Doing it Right’, page 122). What interested me was that there are ways to apply your blush according to your face shape – who knew?! Here’s a scan of their tips, as taught by makeup artist Nick Barose.
- Blush for oval face shapes: Sweep color towards your temples. Think of it like the Nike “swoosh”logo.
- Blush for round face shapes: Add definition by applying your blush at a 45-degree angle – basically, follow the outline of your cheekbones.
- Blush for square face shape: The goal here is to soften your jawline. To do this, put on blush in small circles, focusing more on the apples of your cheeks. (The apple of your cheeks are the fleshy bits that stick out when you smile.)
- Blush for long face shapes: Balance out the length in your face by applying your blush across your cheeks in a horizontal direction. Remember to blend it out to avoid the “war paint” look.

Hope these tip have helped – they’ve helped me greatly, it seems like I’ve been doing it wrong all this time, dang! What do you think? Do you apply blush in a particular way?
