How Do I Prevent Nicks and Cuts While Shaving?

May 23, 2010

New reader N (welcome!) stumbled upon Beauty Fool and wrote me an e-mail asking one of her beauty dilemmas – and I think that this may be a ‘popular’ beauty dilemma so I thought I should make a post out of it! N writes:

Do you know any ways of cleaning the nicks and cuts on my legs due to shaving them? I have no allergies at all, but after the first time I had my legs shaved, I get cuts and nicks all over. Now I am extremely self-conscious to wear short skirts.

Yes, I hope I can help! I’ll write what I think would help but I’m also gonna open this up to my wonderful readers, because I might not be correct. Basically, my first thought is that the skin on your legs are extra dry with dead skin building up, and therefore are prone to cuts and nicks when you shave. What I would recommend is to exfoliate, then moisturize your legs every night so they are soft for the next day, and also to make sure you use a conditioning shaving cream.

The second thing I would say is to change the way you shave your legs – I know shaving against the hair root makes for a closer shave, but it makes your legs prone to nicks, cuts and ingrown hair. Try to shave in the direction that the hair grows and that should help a lot.

For those who might have this same problem but in other areas of your body, I would still say the same: make sure the skin isn’t dry and flaky, use a conditioning shaving cream and shave in the direction of the hair root.

I really hope my tips would help a little, N! If not, I’m gonna open this post up to all of you reading: do you have any advice to give N? How do you get a ‘flawless’ shave?

To be honest, i think that the best way to have silky smooth skin without any cuts is to wax your legs instead of shaving :/ I know, it takes time, but it lasts way longer.

totally agree…for me its using silk e pil though. with waxing i have noticed that your pores become visible over time. but exfoliating regularly is the key.

Oh wow you girls are daring! :-P Waxing looks so painful, although I’m sure it’s really the best for the ‘closest’ shave!

Waxing is probably the way to go if you really can’t get on with shaving, but its expensive and painful, lest we forget! You could try the hair-removal creams that Nair does- they’re expensive compared to a packet of razors every few months, and they’re messy and a bit smelly, but if you’ve got the patience (which I don’t) they could be great.

I shave every other day, and if I didn’t exfoliate and moisturise daily I dread to think what my legs would be like. If you get the exfoliating gloves you don’t have to pay for expensive scrubs, you just use your normal shower gel. You do end up looking like a reverse mime, though. A good tip to avoid nicks is to buy the razors that have multiple blades and rubber grips- the new Gilette Venus ones are good. My sister finds shaving uncomfortable, and she uses them.

Wonderful advice, Jen, thanks for adding your input! :) I think hair removal creams are really great as well, they give a very ‘clean’ look and moisturizes too. My friend does it and it looks great, unfortunately like you I have no patience for that, haha. :-P

Hey! Love the blog! Shaving can be such a journey, and everyone has a different road! I have tried every shaving technique, trick, whatever known to woman, and have discovered that I can not shave my legs ever without coming out with horrible, painful, ugly bumps all over my legs! I have turned to creme hair removal (and I think they are all pretty much the same) but the best way I found to shave my sensitive legs with less irritation was to use a nice scrub and exfoliate before and after, and then I use HAIR CONDITIONER as a shaving cream! It makes your skin soft, and I feel like it conditions the hair, making it more easy to cut, so you can shave one spot just once, shaving over the same place twice can cause irritation.
Hope I added some help!

Hey Ali, thanks so much! :) Glad to have you here.

Thanks for your advice, I think it’s great to have someone who’s ‘been there, done that’ to help advise N! And yes, I def agree with using hair conditioner as shaving cream, I do that as well and it works wonders. Also exfoliation is a must, ’cause of all the dead skin that starts to collect! :)
