Do you wear glasses? I do. Unfortunately I was one very dumb 9 year old, because when my older friend got glasses, I would play around and wear them, just to see what they were like. Fast forward a few months later and my eyesight suffered from it, and needed glasses. Very dumb of me.
I was very self conscious about wearing glasses, because I was one of the few at school who wore them, because 9 years old is quite young to start wearing glasses. You can bet I got a lot of teasing from it, so I really hated them. It also didn’t help that it was the 90′s and those nasty Coke bottles frames my only option. Eeks! I got contacts and have been wearing them since I was 13 (again, too young, I know) and I was SO happy – I felt like myself again!
Today, I’m totally fine with wearing my glasses. I finally got over being self conscious about them when I was around 18 years old. I’m not sure when I got over them, but I just realized that tons of people wear glasses and it’s really no big deal. I am also sure the fact that my glasses were no longer big Coke-bottle frames helped! Also, the few times my friends did see me in them, they all said such nice things – for example, on the very last day of university I wore my glasses (I just couldn’t be bothered, school was over forever!!!) and a few guys commented on how sexy glasses are on girls. I couldn’t believe it! I still obviously prefer not to wear glasses, but I’m OK with them now and am not shy to wear them out and let everyone know I wear glasses.
Do you wear glasses? Have you ever felt self-concious about them? If you still feel self-concious about them, please don’t be! They are so trendy and sexy, try to embrace them and see it as an extra accessory you can sport.

I got glasses when i was 9-10 and didnt really think about until around 13-14 when i started hating them and got contacts and have used them until now (17). But recently they started bothering me so i got new glasses and i absolutley love them
Glasses are actually cool
They are! I am glad you’ve finally accepted and love them now!
I hate them. I just think I don’t look good with them. I’m bored of the frame, but my parents won’t get me another one, and it doesn’t help either that I already have rather small eyes, and as I’m near-sighted, the glasses make them even more smaller.
I don’t really let it affect how I go about with people anymore as it used to though. I think they just made me feel too self-conscious, and I was very insecure (when I was 12-15 years old, now I’m 18).
Ah yeah, they make my eyes look smaller too, as you can tell in the pic! I really don’t like that about them but what can you do? I hope you can get some new frames soon, one thing that can help with making your eyes look bigger is a truckload of mascara
I started wearing glasses in high school but only to read or when I’m at my computer. I used to be very self-conscious about them back then and really hated having to wear them. I would only do so when no one was around. But now I don’t mind wearing them anymore. I think they sexy and cool now.
Glad to hear that Gio.
I think it’s all about getting the right frames that not only suit you, but your taste as well.
I love glasses. I like them so much that it is still one of major reasons for not trying out Lasik.
That’s great, April! Lasik scares me soooo much, I don’t think I could ever do it either
I’ve worn glasses my whole life so I’m used to them. I hate contacts and Lasik doesn’t help with reading so I stick with glasses. I just wish it didn’t cost me $500 every time I want a change.
Wow those are some expensive glasses! Mine was pretty expensive too but thankfully my eyesight has stabilized so I’ve been wearing the same ones (above) for many years, so it’s quite worth it.
And I didn’t know Lasik didn’t help with reading… Interesting. My mom’s friend had Lasik done and a few years later her eyesight went back to being bad, so Lasik was quite useless for her. But then another of my mom’s friend had it done successfully and hasn’t worn glasses in years and year. I guess it’s a hit and miss!
I’ve worn glasses since I was 12 (17 now!) and to me it feels like such a long time!! I’m short sighted so I have to wear them pretty much all the time if I want to see and avoid headaches!!
But I love my glasses, Joop frames! (cost sooo much! Glasses prices are ridiculas!) Reddy brown on the outside and turqouise on the inside! plastic frames, my friends giving me confidence helped so much, they used to clean them for me and try them on all the time! but overall I need to wear them so I do, and I like them!
Couple of boys say girls with glasses look like a sexy secretary!
So true, Martha, that’s what I got too – sexy secretary haha.
It’s so lovely that you have such great friends! Your frames sound super fashionable! Mine frames cost a bomb too, they are Fendi… but I think it’s worth it, as it’s also last many year of me dropping them on the floor, etc and still looks brand new!
You look great in those glasses!
I hate wearing mine. Much prefer contacts, but lately I’m feeling too lazy to deal with them most of the time so end up wearing my glasses!
Thanks Cheryl, I changed the photo though, the other one had that weird shadow thing going on
Haha… I know what you mean. I’ve been so lazy now a days as well! Contacts are such a HASSLE to out on and remove everyday, aren’t they? I used to hate that I’d have to wake up an extra 5 mins (sleep is precious to me!) everyday for school!
When I’m in a rush I always manage to drop my lenses on the floor/sink and then have to find them (whilst blind – always a near impossible task!) wash them again and try to put them in again.
The other day I even managed to put 2 lenses in one eye without realising it. I seriously don’t know how I managed to do it. I spent the entire night wondering why one eye felt irritated and couldn’t see properly. It wasn’t til I got home and took them out that I realised what I’d done! Glasses = soooo much less drama!
2 in one eye? YEOOOUCH! Did it hurt?! I remember once when I was still new with contacts, I think I was 15, I accidently put it the wrong way round and went to school. It hurt like a MOFO the whole day but I refused to take them out and put on my glasses (as I was so self-conscious about them still) so I endured the pain for like 7 hours. Oh, how stupid of me! So much pain just for “beauty”! And I totally agree… glasses is NO drama at all! Love them!
Surprisingly, it didn’t really hurt! I guess that’s why it took so long to realise what I’d done. It was more of an irritation, like I had something in my eye (which I suppose I did!) and oversharp blurriness. It was kind of like when you first put your lenses in and they’re still very wet and everything looks hyperclear and a little blurry (I hope that’s not just me!), which is what I passed it off as being at first!
Ooh, inside out sounds PAINFUL! I used wear gas permeable (semi hard) lenses, and they were an absolute beeyotch when you got something in your eye. Like BLINDING pain. Not good!
I love my glasses. I wear contacts most of the time just so I can wear sunglasses easily, but when it’s cloudy or I don’t need to do anything, I’m all about wearing my glasses. They’re way more comfortable than contacts!
They are definitely so much comfortable than contacts, and especially much easier to put on for lazy days
I love your glasses!
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was about 11 (I’m 16 now). I’ve had moments where i find glasses annoying but generally speaking I love my glasses. And it helps that my glasses have a dark frame so they help frame my eyes.
I will occasionally wear contacts, for example, when I’m going out with friends and I’ll need to wear sunnies for sun protection, or if I’ll being doing something particularly physical.
But quite a few of the guys that I know also find glasses quite attractive.
Thanks, Emma! I love my glasses too
Very happy to hear you are wearing sunnies for sun protection, good for you – protect those peepers!
You look so cute and sophisticated in classes, Renee! I don’t wear glasses and I know it’s easy enough to say, but I don’t think I’d mind them if I had to. There are so many styles to choose from & there’s always the option of contacts.
Thanks, Michaela! I think glasses would look really cute with your bangs!
But let me just say that you are SO lucky not to wear glasses, haha! Trust me, contacts are such a hassle to put on
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was around 8, and I haven’t worn anythings. It sounds weird, but I just really don’t like the idea of touching my own eyeballs if I’m going to put on contact lenses.
I know what you mean, Shusheshe! My best friend also didn’t like anything on “her eyeballs” and normally just wears glasses. She did get over her fear and wears contacts from time to time, though!
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 11. Have been through all kinds of contact lenses, I have wore hard contact leanses, gas permeable lenses, soft lenses, monthly disposables, daily disposbles, Which do I prefer?
My good old glasses. Haha. You look beautiful Renee, with or without glasses.
Aw thank you so much, Ruth. What a nice thing to say!
Haha your good old glasses. I have to agree, glasses are probably the easiest to deal with!
Wow I’m exactly the same as you! Got glasses at the age of 9 and contacts at 13
I never particularly hated glasses, but I think I like them more now than before as I’m probably more confident and don’t care as much what other people think haha. I do much prefer contacts for the obvious reasons~ So convenient!
My sister says I look more ‘intelligent’ with them on so I guess that’s kind of a good thing
Aw so glad you are confident in your glasses! And I do think for some reason, glasses do give off an “intelligent” look
i wear glasses too ! but rimless ones i hate ones with rims because i can see them and it blocks my peripheral vision but i hate them ! it makes me feel ugly so i only wear them indoors or when im not meeting anybody
Aw
I hope you can learn to accept them! Do you wear contacts as well? I know a few of my friends need glasses but they refuse to wear them so they walk around a bit blind, :S
I’ve been lurking around on your blog for a while, not sure whether to comment your posts or not, but now I have a reason to; you look great in your glasses! I myself don’t have the need of glasses (yet) but I always envy girls who wears a nice pair. It gives them a sophisticated and elegant air, and it frames the face. Glasses has become an wonderful accessory. One should wear them with your head held high. =]
/Jenny
Aw thank you Jenny, and welcome!
Glad to meet you!
I guess in this technology age, with all the computer and TV screens, it’s only a matter of time before glasses are needed, haha! Enjoy it while it lasts! My dad had perfect eyesight then when he turned 50 he needed them… he was pissed!
I’ve been wearing glasses since I was 8, and have only recently (Last year) started shifting to contacts- so for 15 years I’ve been wearing them! I’m practically blind without them haha
Never been self-conscious about them, but more of the convenience factor that I switched around
I’m practically blind without my glasses/contacts as well! When I wake up in the morning I walk around like a mad woman until I find my glasses
Glad you are confident about them, that’s really great
I think they’re great if you’ve got a clear complexion!! hehe which means not me…. (:
Aw.
I guess I understand, the glasses bring more attention to the face and can bring attention to blemishes. :/ But concealer and some loose powder does wonders!
i do, and i hate’Em.
I preffer my contacts. Glasses only in my home.
Aw! I hope you learn to love them!
What about if you are doing errands… like running to the supermarket or the doctor? Do you wear contacts there? I’m so lazy I actually wear my glasses most of the time!
You look great in the pic, Renee! And a lot of my guy friends have said that they “dig chicks with glasses” (their words
) I got glasses when I was 9 too! but I was the total opposite of you – i used to think glasses were super cool! you get to take em out and put em on.. (i know, I’m such a dork) but tht’s before i realised those are READING GLASSES. Sigh.
It feels great to not hv to wear glasses/put on contacts and while it costs the earth, it was totally worth it! But I had to stay off contacts 2 weeks leading up to the surgery, and I think tht was the one point in my life where I was really, really self-conscious abt my glasses. Maybe it’s because I was so used to wearing contacts, and to not be able to wear it for events like clubbing or parties made me feel awkward, like I only put on half my makeup or something haha!
I only got annoyed with them when I started playing sports in school. They were such a nuisance! I got my first contacts when I was 16 and I love wearing em because they feel so free! Look Ma, nothing on my face!
But just 4 mths ago, i got LASIK!
OH, come to think of it that’s when I first stumbled across your blog! I was looking for tips on how to wear makeup with glasses! haha!
Thanks, Ri! That’s so great you came across BF thru makeup for glasses! So happy that you found me
OMG! Pleas tell me about Lasik? I do admit I thought about it but eeeek I’m so scared… what was it like?!
To be honest, it’s only as scary as you make it out to be. I know that’s such a cliche but it’s true! I had been thinking about doing it for the longest time so when I finally decided to get it done, it was like “oh, finally! let’s do this!”
If it’s pain you’re worried about, it’s not painful at all. I think tweezing my eyebrows is probably more painful! They put anesthesia drops in your eyes so you don’t feel a thing. Main thing to do is keep calm and it’s over in about 15-20 mins. When I did my surgery they gave me a stuffed dolphin to hug haha. They also told me what they were doing at every step so I was in the know, and that helped calm me down
The procedure is pretty simple and LASIK has come a long way since it was first introduced so the machinery etc. are all very advanced. They do extensive eye checkups on you before deciding if you are a suitable candidate for LASIK. The LASIK ppl take their time to explain everything and answer anything you ask, so you feel comfortable which in turn calms you down!
After the surgery, there will be some discomfort. For the first 24 hours you have to go around like a celebrity, and wear sunnies indoors and outdoors coz your eyes will b very sensitive to light. Other that that, your eyes will feel dry, as if you slept with your contacts on. But they give you a bunch of different eye drops and antibiotic eye drops to apply so as long as you use them according to the prescription you should be fine
I would totally recommend LASIK, if you have the means to do it of course because there’s just no denying tht it costs A BOMB. The first time I opened my eyes and could see the clock on my wall straight away.. wow, totally awesome
BUT, and try not to let this deter you, Renee… no eyeliner and mascara for a month and no eyeshadow for a week after the surgery!
1. You look awesome with your glasses!
2. I got glasses in high school and wasn’t happy about it at all, mainly because they strained my eyes and gave me headaches. I never got teased for wearing them, though, so that was a relief. I actually like the way I look with glasses. They’re like jewelry for the face! I usually wear contact lenses, but they’re such a hassle. Glasses are simple, flatter my face and I like to think they make me look smarter.
I got glasses when I was 8, but I’ve never been self-conscious about them. Sometimes now (I’m 18) I feel silly adjusting them while biking past people to classes, but I’m so used to glasses that I feel weird without them. I tried contacts in 7th grade and could not handle them. I had hard contacts (because my optometrist said that they’re no point getting soft contacts– with hard contacts I could try to stop my eyes from becoming worse. Slightly.) …and I HATED them, they hurt so bad. Now that I’m older I want to try contacts again… but I have a ledge built in to my nose from wearing glasses for over half my life and am self-conscious about that… Just wondering, do you have any cheap “daily contacts” (do they exist?) that I can try?
…I’m so strange, you’re supposed to be self-conscious of your glasses, not of wearing contacts…!! haha
I think you look really good with glasses ;D
Ee, renne I really really love your glasses. What the name of the shape? I’m thinking of changing my glasses frame..i need a new oneeeeee…
I’m wearing glasses to eversince I was in primary 6. At first I didn’t know that I am far-sighted, but then my friends at school started to recognize my weird eyelook when I tried to read what my teacher wrote on the blackboard. hahaha, they all asked me to go to make one glasses..duh, so there i go. that’s how it goes. At first, I was kinda embarrassed to wear glasses, but then I tend to get used to it. Bla bla..fast forward to now, I think wearing glasses is cool after all…either way, i can use contacts and then style up with glasses. haha.
I love my glasses, and have always worn them. Though, I’m always curious about trying contacts, but not so sure if I’m up for it. Though, the only reason why I would get contacts is to wear fashionable sunglasses, but isn’t wearing contacts for fashion also?
Anyways, glasses are so much more convenient, plus you don’t have to bother with taking them on and off (via contacts).
Plus you look super nice in glasses!
I don’t know, in my opinion I think people always look best in glasses. And especially guys look rather more attractive
I’ve been wearing glasses and contacs for almost 3 years now. I started wearing them on my last year in high school. I didnt mind, so i would wear them to school and contacts to go out or any other time… I actually liked because when I was kid everybody in my school would wear glasses or braces and I didnt have any, but I wanted LOL! Now i wear more contacts because I like to wear SUNglasses all day long, but at night, at home I wear glasses to refresh my eyes, it feels good. I like your glasses, they are similar to mine, and mine are light pink, but discreet. I like to wear them because I look smart and inteligent LOL!! Good for u that u are not shy anymore!!
