Exfoliate Your Lips Naturally for Soft, Smooth Lips

November 26, 2009

Do you remember those days as a kid, skipping down to local candy shop, spending your money (all $2 of it) on candy, and then feverishly spreading them all over your lips and making a big mess? …No? Was it just me then? :-P I remember as I kid I’d always buy those ‘magic dust’ candy or take anything with food coloring and spread it all over my lips as if it were lipstick.

Well, those days of spreading sugar all over my lips may make actual sense today – I’ve read that a natural, gentle way to exfoliate lips is to make your very own sugar scrub.

All you have to do is mix some olive oil and some sugar together, pat it on your finger, and gently rub it against your lips. Exfoliating your lips once a week (or more, depending on your lips) gets rid of extra dead skin cells, flakes and reveals soft, smooth lips. It’s also great to exfoliate your lips before applying lipstick, as any flakes or extra bits will show through more with lipstick.

Do you exfoliate your lips? What methods do you use? I know there are many other methods than a sugar scrub as well, but this seems the most gentle, not to mention quick and easy – you can find these ingredients in your kitchen! :)

I use the same method but I replace olive oil with honey! It makes your lips very soft and smells heavenly! Not to mention it tastes waaay better than the olive oil :)

Oh honey sounds way better actually, haha. What a ‘sweet’ recipe! I guess you could eat your sugar scrub after? LOL :-P

I have the two ingredients needed, gotta try that, as my lips tend to flake a lot :/ (i’m so glamour, I know ^^)

Nah, it’s realistic! My lips flake too, mine are very dry! :(

This sugar recipe really helps. During winter time my lips really need a good exfoliation and what else can be more easy to use than sugar:)

Yay! I’m glad you recommend it, too! Sugar really is the easiest, not to mention the sweetest! :D

i use this a lot, but not only on my lips, but also in my face. it works great, even on my oily skin… or, if i don’t want to use oil, i just add some sugar on my favorite soap… and… voila… great exfoliator! it’s cheap and makes my skin sooooo soft!

Hey Lorlori! That’s a great idea to use it on your face as well, if your face can ‘take’ the oil – not to mention you save tons of $$$ – I’ve seen some facial scrubs for over $100! Ridiculous :( I’ll have to try adding it to my body soap, that’s a great idea. I actually also have another DIY scrub recipe up my sleeves, so look out for that :D

I use this recipe as a body scrub all the time! It doesn’t work too well on my lips since mine get really tough and flaky. I slather on a thick balm, like Aquaphor, wait a few minutes and then gently scrub my lips in small, circular motions with an extra soft toothbrush. Works great for me.

Ah yeah I have heard the method of using a soft baby toothbrush; I tried it but it was so harsh for me my lips bleed :( I’m happy to hear this method works for you though, and highly jealous you use Aquaphor! UGH…I need to get me hands on it! I’ve heard how wonderful it is but I can’t find it anywhere here. :(

I mix brown sugar with coconut oil for a gentle exfoliator. I mix up enough to take care of my lips, hands, and elbows. The more solid consistency of coconut oil makes it preferable for me over olive oil, although they’d probably perform equally well.

Hey Amanda

I would love to use coconut oil but you may hear my cries about how I can’t stand the smell – it’s great that it can solidify though, isn’t it? Like you said I’m sure it’ll be a much better ‘substance’ than olive oil. Ooh and GREAT idea – elbows and hands, not to mention the whole body! I have a recipe for a body scrub too coming up and it’s equally easy as this recipe :D

p.s. nice piercing! :D You have a lot of guts! Did it hurt?!

Reply

Amanda November 26, 2009 at 23:54

Thanks! :D Really, it barely hurt at all. My navel and nostril piercings didn’t hurt at all, and this one was more painful, but still really less painful than a paper cut. Getting my ears pierced with the piercing gun was probably the most painful piercing experience I’ve ever had.

Ahh! Crazy! I’ve done my ears many times but I felt that was the most ‘pain’ I’d ever subject myself too, and I was pleasantly surprised that it didn’t hurt. Never dared getting anything else…!

Hey Renee,

I love exfoliating my lips with my toothbrush. It’s completely free AND easy! Haha!

Works fantastically well. What I do is rub my toothbrush horizontally, against my lips & it immediately removes the dead cells & unsightly flakes (: Have you tried?

I haven’t tried your recommendation- olive oil + sugar, will it be too oily? & I assume I’ve to wash it off with soap too? Let me know, as I’ve oily skin so I tend to avoid oil- based products (:

I have tried the toothbrush method but it was SO harsh for me, my lips started bleeding, so I stopped :(

You don’t need to wash it off, as the olive oil will also moisturize! You can do this before brushing your teeth, then just taking a damp washcloth to wipe off the scrub. And nope, as long as you keep this scrub to your lips, it shouldn’t do anything to your oily skin! :) Do try it and let me know!

Thanks for the tip! I’ve tried it and it worked! But I dont like the taste of the olive oil. Maybe I should replace it with honey! I used to peel the skin off till it bleed. :S

Hey Mab, glad it worked for you! :) And yeah, olive oil is also a bit smelly too, no? Haha. Try honey!

Oh I used to peel my lips too, it was horrible… stop it! :-P

My method of exfoliating is using getting a toothbrush with warm water on it and scrub my lips, then while my lips are still a lil wet, I get some sugar and scrub it all over my lips, let it sit for a minute or two then get. Warm watered rag and gently rub it off and some chaptick. I like to use eos lip balm. Thnks

Yes I exfoliate! My methode of exfoliating is to firSt wet my lips then get some and rub in it my lips in circular motion. Then after a minute or two wipe it off with a Cloft that has been wet. Aslfter that I get some syrup (regular syrup, doesn’t matter what type) and rub it on my lip and let it sit for like three and in those three minutes just keep rubbin it between ur top and bottom lip. Then u can either lick it off or wipe it off with a damp washcloft. Afterwards add a very thin layer of Vaseline, petroleum jelly, or a medicated lip balm ex.( Carmex, Burts Bees Wax, or EOS). This method really worx and it’s so sweet. Sugar acts as the exfoliant and the syrup acts a deep, penitrating moisturizer, and the petroleum jelly, Vaseline, or medicated lip balm acts a
“lock in moisturization”, it keeps ur lips smooth, kissable, and soft.
