Embrace Your Shade!

March 27, 2010

Don’t you love a girl who embraces her natural skin tone? Here’s Anne Hathaway at the Alice in Wonderland premiere (still obsessed with the movie!) looking absolutely breathtaking.

I remember once a guy told me, “if you’d get a tan, I’d date you. You’re too pale.” Goodness! (Isn’t it amazing how the West denotes beauty and luxury with being tan and bronzed, while the East think the exact opposite?). Girls, don’t obsess being too tan or too white. Don’t let anyone make you think your skin color is not “good enough!”, whether it’s too light, too dark, too whatever. All skin colors are beautiful and unique in their own ways.

I think self tanners and whitening/radiance products are fine, as long as it’s just a simple thing done once in a while – but I still think it’s even better to love and embrace your natural skin color. (If you don’t agree and must tan, avoid tanning beds and opt for self tanner products. And if you’d like to be fairer, please avoid dangerous ‘bleaching’ creams like a plague and opt for skin care products that promote radiance instead.)

To quote some beauty company I can’t remember, “love the skin you’re in” … it’s beautiful the way it is. :)

Heya!

I’m pretty pale myself and when I was in school people used to tease me for it! Now I like it, it’s who I am ;)

I definitely wouldn’t tell a girl to get a tan before I’d wanna date her, one thing I might do is tell her to get a gym membership if she is on the obese side. (Haha, shallow, I know, but hey, I might inspire people to get in shape)

Thanks for the FF miss!
Have a fantastic weekend with great food and awesome people!

Hehe, I used to get teased too. At gym class in high school everyone would say my best friend and I had ghost legs, so we used to self-tan them a little. Then after awhile it was such a hassle we said F it! Haha. But now I like my ghost legs :)

i’m from the EAST, and yes, it’s true that most people here think that having fair skin is most beautiful. whitening products can be found everywhere. can you imagine, one popular whitening brand even came up with a range for teens?! it sucks, the publics idea of beauty is really altered…

Renee March 28, 2010 at 15:52

Teens?! That’s just wrong … way to make them feel insecure at such an early age! That’s crazy. I saw a documentary on the danger of bleaching creams, it was so scary. These women just wanted to be fairer bceause they didn’t feel ‘beautiful’ enough and ended up completely burning their skin off :( :(

SO TRUE!
BTW the beauty company you quoted is Olay :)
I’m in the “Western” world and it amazes me how many people love to go tanning at salons every week! They look ridiculous and orange! I remember seeing one woman in a grocery store one day. Her skin looked like leather! She must have gone tanning every day.

It’s so bad for your skin and everyone’s natural skin colours are perfect the way they are!

AH! Olay! Haha, thanks Katia. :) I knew it was a brand that was popular because I kept hearing it on TV (but paid no attention to the company, oops!)

I agree, going overboard to the point that your skin looks like leather is horrible, not only to look at but you’re damaging your skin greatly. :(

I agree completely! I had to use whitening products for a while because I got a really bad sunburn when travelling and the skin tone on my face, neck, arms and body didn’t match.

Hey Lyn!

Yeah, I can understand! :( Did they work?

Kate March 27, 2010 at 19:56

As a pale lady, I’m all for people embracing their natural skin tone! There is nothing more ridiculous than orange being passed off as skin… ick!

Ick is right! Bright orange skin is just wrong. :S

Hey Shekin, thanks for the tip! I agree, red lips are HOT, no matter what your skintone. :) Thanks for your kind words :)

Hey, I’m from south america, and people here like tanned skin… it’s common, if you’re pale, to hear: “Are you sick?”… lol… … I’m a olive skin girl, but I’m not obssesive with being tanned… I actually look a little olive-pale… lol… and I love really fair skin.. super orange tan is so ugly! i hate it…

Renee March 28, 2010 at 15:59

Hey Lorlori. :) Yay, I finally know more about you! Which country are you from? Isn’t it weird how the west says you look more ‘healthy/attractive’ when you have a tan, yet the East says you look more attractive with fairer skin? Complete opposites, I’m so intrigued by this…

And yes, orange tans = always a bad idea!

See I am pale with freckles (only recently have I begun to appreciate freckles) and if I don’t have a little bit of color, I don’t look pale…I look like I am sick (this is not just my opinion either). I use Clinique’s lotion gradual tanner, and when I am on the cheap I use Jergen’s gradual tanner. I don’t want to be tan, I just want to look healthy.

I also think when it’s winter (even Cali has a winter, I used to live there…) being tan looks just stupid. It’s obvious during the winter months if you’re super tan it’s because you went to a tanning bed. I also think the clothes and styles of winter just don’t fit a faux tan complexion either…

Hey Hali! :D In no way was I trying to diss anyone who liked to tan. I just meant that those who go overboard with both ways – tanning and whitening – should just learn to embrace their skintone instead, it’s much easier, no? I remember a girl who was obsessed with whitening her skin, when in my opinion (and many others) she had a lovely natural tan. one the other hand, like you said, I’ve seen some who are way too obsessed with being tan, so I mean it with both ways. I hope you don’t think I was dissing anyone who does tan, ’cause I have no problem with it! Going overboard because your insecure about your natural color is a problem, though, in my opinion.

P.S. Dove has a gradual tan that is really good, used to put some on my legs back in the day :-P I think it’s called Energy Glow.

Oh I think you misunderstood me! I wasn’t offended or anything, I was just explaining why I used to tan.

btw, I have pictures of my mother’s SKIN CANCER from never using sunscreen when she was younger (she didn’t know any better..). Not only did she beat Melanoma once, but she also had some cancer pop up on her face and scalp recently. Now, it’s not really even noticeable, until you go to treat it, and then…Well it was around her mouth and it looked like she had a a giant fever blister covering her entire upper lip. She’s lucky she got to use Aldara, because it wont even scare her, just kills the cancer, but it looks so much worse.

All because she was tan when she was young… I wish I could post the picture, it would scare anyone into using sunscreen on the daily. Plus a FULL explanation of how skin cancer can really be…

Oh wow, Hali. You’re mom sounds amazing! That’s so great to hear she has beat skin cancer. :) What an inspiration. I hope she’ll be OK… Let us know how she’s doing.

You’re right, we should not only embrace our natural skintone, but PROTECT it… Sunblock every single day, girls!

OMG this is so true, we must feel comfortable in our own skin.
When i was younger i always tried to change and get tanned and everything but i never achieved what i really wanted (J.Lo color hahah) and then i started having serious acne problems so when i was 14 i stopped taking sun, and i´ve always had alergy to sun and hot water, since i was a child. So it was better for my skin, i had chemical peel and my skin was flawless, since then (4 years ago) i use sun protector FPS 60 EVERYDAY!
And i have many moles too, so i have to use it for that too!
I embrace my skin colour, even though EVERYBODY tells me i need to get a tan, that i am too white, whatever. People talk a lot, specially here in Brasil, everybody lovesssss a tanned skin!!!!!! So, yes people do ask me all the time if im sick or something.
And i have dark dark eyebrows and hair, so that makes me look EVEN MORE PALE.
My father lives far away from my city, so always when i see him he askes “are u sick? why are u so pale?” Bc my sisters and everybody in our family has dark skin.
I feel comfortable in my skin and i will never be layed out there in the sun to change it, and plus, there is skin cancer and is really serious.

that´s a great topic!
Love this blog
xoxo

Deb, I’m so happy to hear you have embraced your natural skin tone, even if your family thinks otherwise. It’s true, while a tan here and there is fine, serious obsession with tanning can lead to more serious problems like skin cancer. We should embrace our natural skintone, celebrate it because we are all unique and then PROTECT it. SPF is so important, I’m using SPF 60 too :)

And I’m happy to hear you are from Brazil! :) It’s always nice to know where all of you are from. Brazil sounds amazing, from what I’ve seen (on TV! Haha).

HAHA! OOMPA LOOMPAS! :D :D :D That’s right! Didn’t they have a funny song too?! Haha oh gosh I need to see that movie again, Johnny Depp was awesome in it, as usual.

Have you seen this site: http://www.paleisthenewtan.com. Check it out for some laughs, I’m sure they are even MORE tanned than the girl at your school, it’s hilarious!

And thanks so much, Meli. I actually didn’t know if I should post these kinda posts; I didn’t want to come across as preachy/insulting. But then I just felt I had to ’cause I was inspired by Anne’s photo above – she looks amazing in her natural skin and I wanted to share :) I’m so glad you like it! :)

I live in Los Angeles, land of fake tans and well, fake everything. It’s really refreshing to see people without Oompa Loompa tans, bleached hair, and those huge bug-eye sunglasses, but it’s rare. It’s so funny how being tan is ideal in the West, but being pale is the ideal in the East. My light-skinned friends envy my natural tan here, but when I visit family in Thailand they always say things like, “you’re so pretty, but you’d look even prettier if you lightened your skin.” I pretty much tell them to kiss my tan-skinned booty, but in a much nicer way, of course, ha! I’m all for embracing natural skin color, too!

P.S. “Love the skin you’re in” is Olay’s slogan. :)

I have always loved the skin im in.. never regretted it.. although there are people when i was in singapore (it’s a typical asian mentality) and even friends who try to make me feel otherwise..though it never mattered to me.. but what surprised me was when I lived here in australia however, I have had girls coming up to me and complimenting me on my skin colour.. The grass is always greener on the other side..

It’s most important to embrace yourself the way you are.. Beauty radiates from within…
And just to add, Im glad that there are more make up products catered to warmer skin tones now than before … So all’s good! :D
