Cure Dried Up Nail Polish in An Instant!

June 3, 2010

Ah, another week already! This week I have a quick tip for reviving your dried up nail polish, especially if you want to use it one last time…

Leaving your nail polish untouched or not screwing the bottle cap back on properly can dry up the formula, leaving it thicker and much harder to apply. For a quick fix, add a few drops of nail polish remover into the bottle and shake well. This will ‘thin’ out the formula a bit for a much smoother application for awhile, or at least until you stock up with a new bottle!

Oh and another tip to make your nail polish last longer? Keep them in the fridge!

How do you deal with dried up polishes? Do you do anything special (like this tip?) or just buy a new bottle? I used to just toss the bottle and get a new one, but if it’s a color I really love (especially gray) then I’d try to ‘prolong’ it

I heard nail polish remover really messes up nail polish. Use thinner instead!

I always put a special thinner for polishes formulas that will keep the nail polish fresh more many months. You could use a nail polish remover but if it contains acetone the result will not be that great. Keep them in fridge tip was cool :)

Some brands have specials liquids to add to the nail polish, because nail polish remover can ruin the nail polish :-(

Eeek, nail polish remover (or pure acetone) is not good for this. Acetone breaks down the solvents in nail polish which is why it removes it from your nails. Nail polish thinners work much better for this, as they replace the liquid part of the polish that’s dried up! Orly makes a great one, as do several other brands. You can get them at Sally Beauty Supply in the US, I’m not sure about in other countries.

Hope this helps!

Bad idea as it will eventually spoil the quality of your nail-polish: use Orly or Mavala thinners (they are the best!)

Yeah You should not use polish remover. The formula is different. Poshe Thinner or Seche restore, just a few drops of it goes a longway than thinner and will not get over diluted with the form of dripper. In Singapore you can get them cheap at http://www.thatbeautyshop.com. Just search the top right search box for what you want.

Whether it is nail polish or cough syrup, I only Roll it between my hands because I am worry about the air bubbles created will cause me issues when I paint my nails and discomfort in my tummy for my med. LOL. But I found Gelish which is a gel polish just like opi, 21 days no chips, no dry up! I am thinking about the switch man. Great for lazy ppl like me, no more rolling and thinner… but I think one year I got to change lesser colors. Anyone here using yet?

Gelish is nice, but it’s not exactly like nail polish. You have to cure it with a UV lamp, instead of just putting it on and letting it dry like nail polish. Without the lamp, it won’t dry at all- that’s why it won’t dry up.
