January 2012 Favorites

January 31, 2012

Sigh… I spent a good part of the weekend trying to figure out my camera (bought a tripod and everything!) to film a video for this, but it was one massive failure. I still really wanted to film, so I ended up filming on my iPhone… 4 times, only that it won’t upload on my laptop. I guess this post is not meant to be a video, so I’ll try another time. I’m sorry!

Anyway, I can’t believe it’s the end of the first month of 2012 already! January has been fantastic, wouldn’t you say?! In the beauty front, I think I’ve also found some things that are gonna stick with me for a loong time – I can see most of this in my “Best of 2012″ post…

Wonderstruck by Taylor Swift

I’ve already written a much-deserved raving review on this one but Taylor Swift’s Wonderstruck perfume is just flawless. I think it’s already one of my favorite finds of 2012 itself, and I’d definitely add it in to my list of favorite perfumes of all time. I can only describe it as very expensive grapes chewy candy – you know Fruitella? It smells like grape fruitella, if it were $200.

Clarins Gloss Prodige

I’ve mentioned Clarins Gloss Prodige on my blog recently so I won’t say much, but this is another I really love it. The color I have is Grenadine, a very juicy reddish pink color and I think it’ll suit any skin tone. The staying power is really impressive, and you know what? It smells like Fruitella as well, I love the smell of it.

Clinique Derma White Concentrate Concealer

I am not sure if I’ve mentioned it on my blog before, but this concealer has been with me all through highschool – it was my faithful friend when I was having an awful time with zits! I found it the other day deep in my makeup bag and started using it again, and it really is fantatsic. Not only for redness and dark eye circles, which is what I’m using it for now, but it’s also amazing for pimples. It’s also a treatment, so while you’re covering up those zits, it also helps lighten the redness in post-pimple marks. And I have to say that it really works well for that because now you can’t tell I’ve had acne, they’ve all healed very well and I think this has helped a lot!

Clinique Even Better Dark Spot Corrector

A little over a month ago, I attended the launch event for Clinique’s Even Better Clinical Dark Spot Corrector (could it have a longer name?!) and in the goodie bag, we were kindly given a bottle to try out.

I originally wrote that I’d review it after a month, but then I read that it takes 3 months to fully “work” and see any results. So instead, I thought I’d do a monthly “progress report” to see how it’s working.

Before I start though, I have to say that I am only testing it out on one dark spot: one I have on nose. Or inside, I don’t know. But you see that little brown spot under my nostril in this photo? Yeah, that ain’t a freckle, like some of my friends claim to be “so cute”. IT WAS A PIMPLE! At least I think it was… I vaguely remember scratching the hell out of it in high school. But whatever it is, I am testing the WHOLE bottle of Even Better on that one spot, I don’t care how long it takes, that thing has to go!

Anyway, I’ve been diligently applying the Even Better Dark Spot Corrector twice a day, morning and night for 1 month, and so far… I see a SLIGHT change, but nothing dramatic. (Oh yes, and just FYI, I think this spot has been on my face for 6 years – minimum – so Clinique, you gotta lot of work to do!) I hope to have better news in Month #2, but so far, it looks like it’s working… but it’s slow. So don’t believe all those reviews where they can see a difference “after the first application” – as if! But so far, so good.

I’ll be back next month but in the meantime, has anyone been using it/has used it? What do you think?

Clarins Gloss Prodige Lipgloss

Gong Xi Fa Cai to everyone who celebrates it! I’m starting the Chinese Year of the Dragon – my year!!! Any other dragon babies (born in 1988) here? – with Clarins’ Gloss Prodige Intense Color & Shine lip gloss (yes, my obsession with lipgloss still continues!). I don’t think I even have to say it, do I? This lipgloss is fantastic! These are my lips, completely naked except for the lipgloss.

This color is Grenadine, which looks very red in the tube (that’s why I wanted it for CNY!), but comes out quite slightly more pink. It’s more intense than this, but I didn’t apply too much, but you can layer it for more intensity - the amount of color it has is very impressive. It’s not only incredibly pigmented but the moisturizing properties are superb, but my favorite bit is that it also smells like Frutella chewy fruit candies – SO yummy. I can’t stop smelling the tube!

What’s on your lips at the moment? Hope you’re having a fantastic holiday!

Bellabox Singapore

Beauty box subscriptions are popping around in Singapore, and Bellabox was the first! (Don’t you love originals?!) I was given a box to try, and to be honest – I already loved it when I saw the box. Talk about chic!

Bellabox Singapore

Bellabox is also the cheapest option in the market, and for $15 a month you will get a beautiful box delivered to your home filled with 4-5 beauty samples. I met with the founder, Emily (and her adorable office dog!) and we were talking about how boring the beauty scene can get with the same old brands, and our love for discovering cute little indie brands. She said that her vision for Bellabox is to introduce new, cult and niche brands to the market, so I’m really excited!

Taylor Swift Wonderstruck Perfume

I don’t think anyone really knows this, but I am a major Taylor Swift fan girl. Her album Fearless is perfection in my books, and her song “You’re Not Sorry” is the soundtrack of my (relationship) life! How did she read my mind?! I LOVE HER!

So when I saw she came out with a perfume, I didn’t roll my eyes like I do every time I see a new celebrity perfume (Pamela Anderson, who is buying your perfume? LOL). I know I had to get my hands on it. And if I thought that Britney Spears’ sweet perfumes were the best celeb fragrances out there, they now need to step aside – Taylor’s perfume is now the #1 celeb fragrance in my life.

Featuring notes of freesia, green Tea, apple Blossom, raspberry and dewberry, this scent is described as a floral, but I find it to be a little more fruity – the berries are very distinct. The scent is so undeniably young and girly, but not in a “you can call me Princess” kinda way. I’d say it’s definitely targeted to teens (the bottle is beautiful, but a little too “young” for me) but apart from that, you can’t really tell – it’s just a lovely, sweet scent. Just like Taylor! Lovely and sweet. What’s cool about the bottle though, is that is has a special iridescent rainbow finish to give it that magical glow to it – the first in the fragrance industry.

Sukin Botanical Body Wash

I mentioned way back that I spotted Australian Organic brand, Sukin at Watsons but didn’t get a chance to check it out until a few weeks ago. There was a sale going on for a mega sized tub of the Botanical Body Wash, but since I hadn’t tried it yet, I bought the smaller version just in case I didn’t like it.

And… well, let’s just say I am going back for the bigger tub later this week. ;)

The Botanical Body Wash is just that – a mix of fresh, luscious ingredients such as Aloe Vera, Chamomile, Rosehip Oil, Avocado Oil and Vitamin E. The wash lathers up nicely and quite simply, it is just works. The scent is out of this world – it reminds me of living in a jungle (um, make that a jungle castle paradise,) and taking an outdoor shower – this body wash smells close to nature, it’s indescribable. (But for those who want full descriptions, the scent includes essential oils of tangerine, mandarin, lavender and vanilla.) Such a simple, beautiful product.

Have you tried any products from Sukin? What were your faves? I’ll definitely be looking at their other stuff; so far I am really loving the brand!

My BFF from New Zealand is leaving tomorrow (sob), so yesterday we met to have one last dinner together. After stuffing ourselves, we decided to walk around town, and when I saw a small poster of Lush, I immediately remembered that Lush came to Singapore (geez, how could I forget?!) and dragged her to the store. (And yes, she was the one who gave me my first Lush product this Christmas!)

And, honestly? It’s alright. I wasn’t blown away. Not yet, at least.
