How to & Tips

Another week, another beauty tip. ;) This week: tame messy, unruly eyebrows with items you already have somewhere in your beauty closet! Brow gels are great, but most of them are just brands that slap on their name, pretty packaging and mark up the price by about 400%… it’s way too expensive if you just need a quick fix now and again in between brow tweezing sessions.

For this quick fix, grab a toothbrush and some hairspray. Next, hold your hairspray about a foot away from the toothbrush and spray the bristles of the toothbrush. Then run the toothbrush up and across your brows to secure that all hair is in place. Voila, groomed brows!

(Oh yes, and this goes without saying, but use a separate toothbrush, not the one you use in your mouth everyday. Do not ever put a toothbrush full of hairspray in your mouth!)

What do you think – have you ever tried this beauty tip? It’s one of the more ‘famous’ ones!

The title says it all, really. As if eyeshadow doesn’t already do enough, (eyeshadow can be used on your cheeks, your brows, contouring…) it can also help with your hair color.

For a quick fix to cover up roots, pat some eyeshadow that is the same color as your hair on your roots. The easiest is to get a blunt sponge eyeshadow brush, like those standard brushes you get in an eyeshadow palette.

This trick especially works for those wanting to cover lighter colored roots to match their darker haircolor. So if you ever are in a hurry to go out and forgot a root-job, try it! Aunty Beauty Fool swears by it. ;)

Have you ever tried this trick out before?

One of the worse parts of high school for me (apart from, um, everything) was that my skin was a ranging, hormonal mess.

My best friend and I both suffered acne together. Though it was considered mild acne, we were plagued by blemishes, ranging from blackheads, whiteheads, pimples and the occasional painful cystic pimples.

I am extremely glad to report that both of our skin has settled down immensely from our hormonal teenage years, though the practices for clean, clear skin is always on our minds. Even after my skin began to get better, I’ve always tried my best to take care of my skin. I think anyone who has experienced some sort of acne would know how awful it feels, and try their best to prevent it from happening again! Here are some of my tips to keeping your skin in tip top condition and hopefully preventing new breakouts.

Remove all makeup at night.

This is the #1 makeup tip and I really cannot stress it enough: Do. Not. Sleep. With. Your. Makeup. On… EVER! Remember, before bed, remove every trace of makeup and cleanse thoroughly. I do a double-cleanse that I talked about here and would definitely recommend doing that.

Keep hair out of your face.

In my experience, acne and bangs do not go well together. However, you might be a bit lucky. Eitherway, hair can trap a lot of grime, dirt and oil, and it can spread it to your face, causing breakouts. The best advice I can give is to wash your hair regularly, and if you’re hanging out at home, wear hairband to make sure not a single strand of hair is in your face.

Use the correct products.

  • Skincare products: I know what it’s like to go a little overboard with skincare products. For example, I once tried the Proactiv skincare line in hopes that because it was so powerful, my light acne will be banished faster and never come back. Wrong. Proactiv burned my skin, made me breakout even more, and my skin could not tolerate it and all sorts of reactions occurred. Lesson learned: stick to what your skin actually is. Don’t go overboard! If it’s just a little pimple here and there, don’t go overboard with acne washes and medication. For moisturizers, try to find an oil-free, non-comedogenic formula and ones that are marked for acne-prone skin. And yes, even though your skin is still oily, you still need moisturizer!
  • Makeup: For liquid foundation makeup, use non-comedogenic (doesn’t clog pores) and oil-free products. I would highly recommend mineral makeup, especially in its power form for oily skin. Mineral makeup is amazing for acne-prone skin and gives flawless coverage. (Check out the other pros and cons of mineral makeup here.)

Be gentle on your skin.

Keeping the above tips in mind, when applying these products on your face, be gentle. Aggressive applying of makeup and scrubbing your face can aggravate your breakouts and make them worse. Be gentle by applying light pressure from your fingertips to your skin when rubbing on your skincare products. (Check out my post, How to: Cleanse Your Skin Properly for more tips.) For makeup, keep a light hand when using a brush.

It’s that time of the week again! Whether you’re applying tinted moisturizer, liquid foundation or moisturizer, there is a tip to really get the most out of your product.

To get the most out of the dollop of product you squeezed out, instead of squeezing it onto the back of your hand, squeeze the product onto your palms. Take two fingers and really ‘mix’ the product in – the heat from your fingers will make the cosmetic more spreadable for a flawless finish, and you use less product. If, like me, you are a beast and like to slap on your makeup, rub the makeup gently between your palms and spread it all over your face. This also uses such a small amount of product it’s unbelievable – your products would last much longer!

How do you apply your products? Do you do anything special or do you just slap it on? ;)

Sorry for the lack of posts this week, I have been entertaining as my best friend from New Zealand has been in town, and have been getting ready for my graduation! The week seemed to pass by and I can’t believe it’s Beauty Tip of the Week time!

This beauty tip is extremely easy to do. It’s done a lot in makeup application to ‘lift’ your eyes, and doubles up as an ‘anti-aging’ makeup trick for those who want a bit of a brighter appearance around the eyes. All you have to do is apply highlighter shadow on your brow bone (right under your eyebrow).

Benefit has a product just for that called High Brow, but really, any shimmer eyeshadow can do the trick. Just apply it straight across underneath your brows, and make sure to blend – you don’t want a very unnatural line of shimmer underneath each eyebrow!

Sigh. I guess I don’t really even need to write anything because the title says it all!

Anyway – if you have a favorite eyeshadow color and you want it as a lip color too, (and in a short amount of time) here’s something you can do. First, rub some eyeshadow on the back of your hand. Dip your finger in some Vaseline and mix it with the eyeshadow so the two blend. Ta-da! Your new favorite lipgloss.

This is especially useful for those who want more ‘out there’ lip colors that are usually easier to find in eyeshadow form. Whether you wat to experiment with bright purple lips one day, bright orange the next, mixing Vaseline with your eyeshadow really works! (Granted you have a lot of eyeshadows, of course.) If you want even more sparkle you can even add glitter to the mix, like the girl in the photo above.

Have you ever tried doing this with your favorite eyeshadow color?

Ah, another week already! This week I have a quick tip for reviving your dried up nail polish, especially if you want to use it one last time…

Leaving your nail polish untouched or not screwing the bottle cap back on properly can dry up the formula, leaving it thicker and much harder to apply. For a quick fix, add a few drops of nail polish remover into the bottle and shake well. This will ‘thin’ out the formula a bit for a much smoother application for awhile, or at least until you stock up with a new bottle!

Oh and another tip to make your nail polish last longer? Keep them in the fridge!

How do you deal with dried up polishes? Do you do anything special (like this tip?) or just buy a new bottle? I used to just toss the bottle and get a new one, but if it’s a color I really love (especially gray) then I’d try to ‘prolong’ it
