How to & Tips

Let me just start by saying I am an expert in killing my hair, so this post is a long time coming.

In high school my best friend and I would straighten, perm, dye, (you name it) to our poor locks, all in the hopes of finding our ‘style’ and what suits us. I’m happy to report we have both found out that shoulder length, wavy hair suits us best (at least for now) but getting there was not easy. I stopped straightening and dying my hair years ago, which resulted in the healthiest my hair has ever looked. However, earlier this year I was very naughty and got a awful digital perm that ruined my hair. I also backcomb it quite a bit for volume so my poor locks is in dire need of a detox. Here are my tips to getting your hair back in shape… Good luck!

1. Trim Dead Ends

Really, the only way for your hair to look and feel remotely healthy again is to get a trim, no matter how painful it may be! Snip off at least 2 inches of dead ends and it’ll really start to make a difference, promise.

2. Lay Off The Chemicals

You can do it! This means no dying, and God forbid, no relaxers or perms – they are horrible to your hair. If you must dye it once again to get back to your root color, do so. After that, give your hair a serious break.

Guess who’s back… back again? Beauty Tip of the Week! Yes, I am gonna try bringing this regular back because it’s one of my favorites to write – and I hope they are helpful to you!

But back to this week’s tip. The thing about smokey eyes is that you’re dealing with very dark colors, and when applying the shadow, some might fall down to your cheeks, smudge, and create a big mess. I know that when I started out, my dark shadow would fall to my under eye area, and when I tried to rub it off, it would just smudge so bad that it looked like I had some serious dark eye circles!

To avoid this from happening, grab a big fluffy brush and dip it in some loose powder. Swipe the loose powder underneath your eyes, from the outside of your nose to your temples – this powder will ‘catch’ any falling eyeshadow. And the best part? After you’ve done with your smokey eyes, simply take that fluffy powder brush and swipe across the loose powder, removing it. When the loose powder is gone, so is all the dark eyeshadow fallout. This is such a simple trick to catch any eyeshadow (especially when it’s so dark!) and it is so simple at the end. Just brush the powder off, and everything looks perfect. It’s one of the most well-known makeup tips, and it just works.

Have you tried this makeup tip out to prevent eyeshadow fallout? Or are you so good in eyeshadow application that this never happens, you lucky thing? ;)

This tip takes the phrase ‘short and sweet’ to a while other level.

Want an instant face ‘lift’ on days you’re just not feeling it? Your new best friend is a high ponytail.

Yes, that’s it! Something about it draws the eyes upwards and gives you that ‘re-fresher’ you need. I do this myself (it’s one of my favorite hair dos!) and everytime I do it, I get comments saying I look like I got a great night’s sleep. Who knew?! Try it!

There is no other cliche more nauseating than ‘eyes are the windows to the soul’. At least in my opinion. Unfortunately, you are going to hear it once more here: eyes are the windows to the soul, so let’s be sure we take care of them!

Here’s my guide to keeping your pretty peepers in good shape. Adopt these good habits and those windows of yours are gonna look mighty shiny.

Proper Lighting (Get Some.)

Poor lighting is death for your eyes. Just ask my friend who had a habit of reading under his bedcovers with a torchlight (I give myself one guess to what he was reading that was so secretive ;) ). Five years later? Glasses. Not only does poor lighting eventually spoil your eyes, it makes your eyes strain the muscles and cause fatigue. Keep your reading material at least a foot (30 cm) away when reading and make sure you have proper light.

Take A Break

Constant straining of your eyes, including endless hours playing video games, reading, chatting online, reading Beauty Fool at 4 in the morning (I’ll forgive you for that one) can lead to strained eye muscles. Not only that, it can cause headaches and blurry vision. The fix? Every now and then, look way. Look far off to a distance and just relax your eyes from all the strain and stress. What I do is now and again, cover my eyes with my palms and make it as dark as possible, because the darker it is, the more relaxed your eyes are. Whatever you prefer is fine, but bottom line? Take a break!

Little known fact about me: I’m obsessed with eyebrows. It’s literally one of the first thing I notice about people. And if they have no eyebrows or over-plucked (one of my top beauty crimes)? I find myself very uneasy! Tweezing, however, especially when you’re just starting out, can be a little painful. Here are three tricks you can do that eases some of the pain of tweezing until you get used to it….

The first tip? Store your tweezer in the freezer a few minutes before you pluck. This prevents the tweezer from being too ‘sharp’ and accidently gripping bits of your skin – ouch! The second tip is to rub ice all over your eyebrow area before you tweeze. Yes, you’ve probably figured out why – the ice will numb the area, which mean less sensitivity and less pain. Last but not least, whilst tweezing, focus your tweezer as close to the hair root as possible and pull in the direction of the hair growth. Less pain all the way!

Hope my tips have helped! Do you do anything to lessen the pain of tweezing? Or are you like me and a warrior when it comes to tweezing? ;)

It’s your favorite time of the week! ;) OK, maybe not, but I really like writing the Beauty Tip of the Week posts because it means it’s a Thursday – and the weekend is just one day away!

This week’s tip is super simple. If you’ve run out of blush (shocker! horror!), walk, don’t run to your closest pink or peach lipstick (dark colors like reds, purples and browns won’t work with this tip). All you need to do is rub a cotton ball over your lipstick, and pat some on the apple of your cheeks – not too much, or you’ll be needing this blush tip.

Next, use your middle and ring finger to blend the lipstick on your cheeks and follow your cheekbone up to a little before your earlobes. Keep it light handed and remember to blend. Voila, your very own cream blush.

Have you tried this makeup trick before? How did it work for you? Those who are acne-prone may want to skip this trick though, as the oils from the lipstick may cause breakouts.

This post needs no introduction, don’t you think? There are a little over 3 more months left to the year, and wouldn’t 2011 be awesome if all our body image woes were put away? Here are some of my ideas of starting to love your body the way it is… please add your own, too!

Love your best feature. Instead of focusing on the body part you hate, why not emphasize the one that you love? If you hate your nose but love your lips, why not experiment with bright and bold lip colors to show them off? Same with your body – if you love one body part more than the rest, emphasize them and dress them up.

Ban all negative body talk. Make it a point to you and your group of friends to ban negative body talk – whether it’s complaining about your weight or gossiping about someone else – both are as horrible as each other and I recommend to stop it! Anytime you or someone else even starts, don’t worry about coming across rude – just tell them to stop.

Accept people of all sizes. I cannot begin to explain the disgust I felt when an ex-boyfriend made a comment about a larger girl. Thank heavens he’s long gone form my life. I’d suggest you don’t ever be as classless as that – never make comments about other people’s size! Just like eye colors and heights, people come in different shapes and sizes. Learn to accept it and stop judging others or yourself. If everyone looked the same this planet would be extremely boring, don’t you think?
