How to & Tips

Ack! It’s that time of the week already?!

If you’re like me and suffer from dry lips – and hate how lipstick can look on it – here’s something you can do before applying your lip products.

First, apply copious amounts of lip balm, and spend a few seconds ‘massaging’ it in. (I use Rosebud Lip Salve, which is amazing; try it!) Next, take a soft towel and rub it off. Not only does this intensely moisturize your lips, but it also gently exfoliates them to reveal a softer surface, allowing smoother, better application for your lip products.

Another tip I would recommend when applying lipstick on dry lips is to ‘pat’ the color on instead of applying it straight from the tube. This deposits less product, so it won’t highlight any dryness.

Have you tried this tip before? Personally, I have dry lips and I do this trick, especially when I try on bolder colors like my fave, red. :)

So… we’ve accepted it. Dark eye circles are here to stay, and no amount of eye cream or lasers can get rid of it, no matter what they claim. What can get rid of it, although temporary, is a kick-ass concealer and this tip.

While applying concealer, the norm is to just apply it under neath your eyes, where the dark circles are. This is great, of course, but one area that many tend to forget is the side of your nose bridge. It is important to also apply your concealer all the way up to the sides of your nose because shadows are created there, making dark eye circles look worse. In fact, most of the time all you need is to conceal that area for your dark eye circles to look better instantly!

So remember: apply concealer from the outward (the outer corners of your eyes) all the way along your dark eye circles, and up your nose bridge (as illustrated by my amateur arrow drawing, above). This will make a huge difference, promise!

Have you tried this tip before? Do try it out and let me know – I’ve done this for years and it’s one of the best tips I can give you! And speaking of deadly dark eye circles, check out Serious Dark Eye Circles? Bobbi Brown Has Expert Tips to Help for tips from the makeup master herself.

If it’s a beauty tip you seek, you’re in luck – it’s that time of the week! (Oh dear, look at me trying to freestyle at 2am.)

Anyway – back to business. One of my biggest tip I can give concerning lipstick is to actually not apply it straight from the tube. This is because normal application – applying the stick of product straight to your lips  - dispenses a lot of product at one go, and gives the color a very “painted on”, flat look to your lips. This is especially obvious with bright lip color.

When I sport a bright lip, I instead use my fingers and ‘pat’ the color on my lips. This gives a very lush, “stained” look, and if your lipstick color is a red or deep colors, it gives a very sexy “just bitten” effect.

How do you apply bright lip colors? If your into tools, a thin lip brush also does wonders for application. Personally though, I’m more “hands on” and like to apply my makeup with my fingertips! ;)

(And speaking of bright lip color, I’m starting to get a little bit more experimental with colors – I’d love to try lilac, cranberry, fuchsia, and my favorite – orange! Do you have any brands and shades to recommend? Thanks in advance!)

Best pasta I’ve ever had! Milan, Italy 2009

Whether you’re watching your weight, trying to lose weight or simply want to start making healthier food choices, there is no reason not to go out and eat. Yes, restaurants cook food for flavor and taste (because they obviously want you to enjoy it so much that you come back!), and most of the time, that means a lot of seasoning and added ingredients that are usually unhealthy. In fact, food at restaurants tend to have 50% more calories than if you cook it at home, and with portion sizes increasing, eating out can be a real risk to any health or weight management plan.

Since I’ve started to take control of my health a few months ago and trying my best to eat healthier, I’ve learnt some tips on what to do when eating out – and of course I want to share them with you! Believe it or not, there is a way to go out and enjoy yourself without packing on unnecessary calories, you just gotta be smart on little choices. So without further ado…

My tips on eating out, making healthier choices and having fun!

Choose the right restaurant.

First and foremost, if everyone is open for suggestions on places to eat, do suggest healthier places you may already know. Everything starts with the place you eat at, so always be smart about picking your restaurant. (And no, McDonald’s is not a restaurant!) Choose a place that offers healthy menu options – that way you can enjoy yourself without becoming fixated and scared of packing on tons of calories.

If you don’t know any healthy places, do your research beforehand! I am certain there are restaurants that serve healthier options. And if you want to go further, research on healthy, organic, vegan, or even vegetarian places to go to.

Drink at your own risk.

Beware of pre-dinner or after dinner drinks. It’s nothing but empty calories. I’m lucky on this one, because I actually hate most drinks – I literally only like water, but can tolerate (some) fruit juices or Gatorade (and that’s only when I have a stomachache!) I remember one of my friends put on a whopping 10kg (22lbs) in just 6 weeks (!) when visiting Singapore. He hadn’t been here in a while, so there was a lot of going-out, dinners and partying – he completely overdid the alcohol and grand dinners. Now, I get partying – you’re young and having fun. But if you’re really concerned about your health/weight/life, you should seriously reconsider your alcohol intake. Obviously, you can still go out and have fun, but never overdo it.

What, Thursday already? You know what that means…

The mascara industry, as you can imagine, is HUGE; understandably too – who doesn’t want long, fluttery, flirty lashes? And eyelash curlers are right here with them. However, there’s no need to buy fancy heated curlers, because there’s a very simple trick you can do to make your eyelash ‘hold’ the curl better.

All you need to do is blast your eyelash curler with a blow dryer for about 5 seconds – not too long though, you don’t want to burn off your eyelashes! (Oh, and for more tips on eyelashes, check out my post Simple Mascara Tricks to Get Your Best Lashes Ever!)

Have you ever tried this tip? I don’t use eyelash curlers now, but I’ve tried a heated eyelash curler in the past and it really worked well, but so did this blow dryer trick – try it and let me know if it works for you!

Ah! It’s time for beauty tip! And sure, this tip might be common sense – but hear me out; this is something to always remember!

Take a look around the hair salon at your next visit and you might be surprised: people sitting in all sorts of funny positions while getting their hair done. I think we can all understand their frustration, though – sitting on that chair for hours is tiring! But take it from me – NEVER cross your legs while getting a haircut (guilty…). This may make the haircut come out uneven, and you will have to suffer a very unsightly hair cut for months ’til it grows out (guilty again). The best bet is to sit up straight, no matter how restless you are, to ensure your cut stays even. (Wanna laugh at another one of my hair woes? Check this post out.)

So remember… listen to your mother and sit up straight!

What do you think of this tip? And does anyone have their own horror hair story to share? I have definitely learnt my lesson and am VERY attentive when getting my hair done now-a-days. ;)

Now that the sun has decided to start showing its face again (in Singapore, at least – it has been raining non-stop!) it’s time for a very important anti-aging tip for your precious hands.

You see, there is a saying that goes, if you want to know a woman’s true age, look at her hands. This is because your hands – especially the back of it – is the first place to age… who knew? So, always remember this: After applying sunscreen to your face, squeeze an extra little dollop and apply it to the back of your hands. Alternatively, you can also find a hand cream that contains SPF – but make sure it is no lower than SPF15!

Do you apply sunscreen to your hands? If you don’t… get to it! This is one of the more important anti-aging tips, you won’t regret doing this. :)
