How to & Tips

I’ve always been very minimalist when it came to my makeup. Just two years ago, I could fit my makeup collection into a normal-sized pouch and call it a day. But not anymore – my collection has grown leaps and bounds!

I think one of the reasons why my collection was so small in the past was because I used to clean them out regularly, and I cannot recommend that enough. I’ve been doing it recently (perhaps once every few months) and it has been so good – I hate clutter! This gave me an idea on posting how to organize and (hopefully) simplify your crazy makeup collection.

Gather everything. And I mean EVERYTHING. Depending on how big your makeup collection is, this might take a while. From your daily essentials, to that box of makeup you found in a closet, to around the house (I recently found a lip balm deep in my couch?!), grab all of your makeup. Think of places you might’ve left some (your handbag, bathroom, etc) – basically go on a wild goose chase! Once you’ve gotten everything, lay them on the floor or any other big space. (For very “grand” spring-cleaning, I’d recommend laying them all on a newspaper to prevent any mess – I found some stuff that were not only were they dirty as hell, some were actually leaking. And last month, I opened a mascara I found from God-knows-when and it was actual dust in the tube. Gross!)

kim kardashian cosmopolitan magazine

So, if you’ve read my post on bikini body confidence and you’re STILL strutting around in your bikini (you sexy beast), then remember this: Apply sunscreen under your bikini as well. Swimsuits have an SPF 6, so the sun can still get through and harm your skin. The best thing before going for a swim then, is to apply sunscreen head to toe before you wear your swimsuit, just to be extra safe.

P.S. Thanks Cosmopolitan for this week’s short-and-sweet (and important!) tip. I am quite surprised about the magazine, though – I was under the impression it was just on men, sex, men and more sex. But I got a free year long subscription on my iPad and it’s actually pretty good.

Oh foundation… giving us flawless, perfect skin since 200 B.C. (I Googled! Wikipedia never lies.) Unfortunately, with Summer’s humidity and late night partying/dancing (or whatever else you do in the wee hours of the night that might cause you to sweat, ahem), foundation is NOT enough.

Case in point: I was wearing tinted moisturizer one night at the beach a few years ago (yes, I remember ’cause it was THAT bad), and it was hot, humid, stuffy and gross. Of course, my face started sweating off the tinted moisturizer, and it was not pretty. So I yelped for joy at what I discovered the other day while I was watching a friend apply her makeup (yes, I’m a creep). I was silent the whole time (even more creepy), but when I saw her mix the greasiest-looking sunblock with her expensive Guerlain foundation, I yelped, “WHAT do you think you are doing?!”. She nonchalantly replied that the water-resistance sunscreen makes the foundation hold better and survive a night of dancing.

That smart woman!

It does make sense. If you can make your own tinted moisturizer by mixing together foundation and moisturizer, why not make your own sweat-proof, long-lasting, non-fade foundation? All you need to do is squirt a bit of foundation on the back of your hand with some sweat-proof, water-resistant sunblock, mix it together and apply to your face like normal. Voila! Sweaty face be gone! (BTW, I haven’t tried it myself yet, so experiment at your own risk.)

If you try this out, please let me know. I’m very curious because I have not come across a foundation that promises to be sweat-proof, non-fading, etc. (Correct me if I’m wrong!)

A Sight for Sore Eyes

June 16, 2011

If you follow me on Twitter, you’d know that on Monday morning I woke up with the nastiest infection on my eyelid. And while many of you assumed it was due to makeup, it actually wasn’t – I haven’t worn it in weeks! It was however, the cause of something totally random: hand cream. I slather on hand cream every night (perhaps too much) and rubbed my eyes a little too hard that night, forgetting that my hands were filled with all that gunk. I can only assume my eyes do not like Nivea in it, so BOOM! infection the next day. Gross.

This got me thinking about how precious our eyes are. With all the makeup and beauty products that go near it – how can we prevent all sorts of nastiness that could happen to them? Here are some ways I can think of:

1. Take it from me: don’t accidently rub your eyes when you have hand cream on!
2. Sharpen your eyeliner pencil before every use, and remember to clean your sharpener regularly.
3. Do not share eye makeup of any kind, especially mascara and eyeliner.
4. Do not share contact lenses or let friends “borrow” them. (I heard about this “trend” a few years ago – don’t ever do this!)
5. When tight-lining your eyes, remember these tips to keep it as hygienic as possible.
6. Throw away mascara after 3 months – regardless if it “still looks good”. Better to be safe than sorry.
7. Always remove all traces of your eye makeup before going to sleep – don’t ever sleep with it on!

Basically – take care of your eyes!

Anymore points to add?

Why yes, bikini season is upon us! Are those groans I hear? OK, I understand – prancing around in a bathing suit is pretty intimidating, especially with all those perv– uh, I mean watchful eyes at the beach. Who wouldn’t feel self-conscious? But I think it is time to let it all go. Life is too short.

One of my biggest insecurities growing up was wearing a swimsuit on vacation, and it was only a few years ago that I got over it – and boy is life so much more fun when you just don’t care! I already talked about how to start loving your body, so this time I am gonna share some of the lessons I’ve learnt in bikini body confidence, so this Summer you can quit hiding behind the beach towel and have fun.

1. That Old Cliché

Let me start off by saying the greatest cliché known to man: nobody is perfect. It’s been said to death because it is true. NOBODY is perfect.

We all come in different shapes and sizes. It’s the differences that make us unique, so we shouldn’t obsess about them! Why waste your time? Looking at your body in the mirror and analyzing each part you hate is not doing any good. Instead of looking at your “big arms”, be thankful you actually have two full-functioning arms. Be THANKFUL you have a healthy body and drill it into your head that nobody is perfect. There is so much more important things to worry about in the world than your jiggly butt on the beach. I mean honestly.

2. The Secret

I can remember when I was 13 and in beautiful Costa Del Sol, Spain. I would go to the beach every day, and I never went into the water. Why? Because I was so self-conscious of my body. In school I was teased for being so tall and “boney”, I was certain that everyone would stare. And there were boys there! What if they said all the nasty things the boys used to say at school? What if they looked at me and shouted “Skeleton!” as well? I couldn’t bear the humiliation. Now I am kicking myself because the beach was so beautiful – and how many times am I in Spain? I missed the opportunity to go and really enjoy myself because I cared what strangers thought of me. I mean, it’s not like I knew any of them or even remember what they look like now! So really; think about it. Who cares what others think? Why are stranger’s opinions having any impact on you?

… And here’s The Secret: not everyone is looking at you. It’s all in your head. Relax; which brings me on to my next point…

3. Have fun!

Whether you’re at the beach or by the pool, have fun! You are only young once. The secret to being confident is to have fun. When you’re happy and having a ball, the last thing on your mind is, “Can they see my cellulite? Does my butt look big in this suit?” So get out there and play beach volleyball, eat ice cream, read a book or take a dip in the ocean. We are healthy and alive, and so blessed to be able to go to the beach, so have fun and enjoy the moment!

Water Works

June 3, 2011

Uh oh… it’s that time of the week again!

Here’s a tip from my BFF in grade school – yes, grade school! She taught me this when we were about 10 years old and just starting to play around with nail polish. I don’t know where she got this trick from, but it sure does work! Basically, it’s just putting cold water on your nails after painting them. Once your nail polish is partially dry, run cold water over it for about 30 seconds (or if you prefer, dipping your fingers into a bowl of cold water). The cold temperature will set the nail polish, speeding up the drying time greatly.

Have you ever done this before?

Dirty Talk

May 27, 2011

Hands up – who has a cell phone? (Better question, who doesn’t have a cell phone?!) Either way, if you’re a cell phone owner, take note – our precious phones are one of the dirtiest things we can rub against our faces, and can cause some serious zits.

Think about it: We press it against our face, touch it with our dirty fingers, and the poor thing is thrown around the whole day, touching all sorts of surfaces. So you can bet it’s a breeding ground for some nasty dirt and bacteria, which can cause pimples. The remedy? Clean it, of course! I’d recommend to clean it everyday. All you need to do is grab an antibacterial wipe and give your phone a good wipe down. If you want to take it further, you can buy those pretty casings that you remove when you need to use it – it’ll protect your phone when you’re leaving it on the table, or in your handbag, especially if you’re the type to dump all sorts of crap in it (guilty).

Do you clean your cellphone regularly? Fess up! I never used to, but I definitely do now – cell phones are nasty!
