Ask Me Anything (I Have Something to Ask, Too)!

Yeow! It’s that time again. Every 6 months or so I like to do a “Ask Me Anything” post where it’s basically a free post – if you have any questions, please ask me! If you feel like ranting, or just talking about non-beauty things as well, go ahead! There are no rules. (Past posts are here and here.)

Also, this time round, I have some questions to ask YOU! :D

I have left that job in that beauty company and once again I am my own boss so more focus on the blog, yay! I doubt anyone knows but waaaay before Beauty Fool (back in 2005/06) I had another beauty blog, and I remember I did so many cool reader-submission stuff, and I wanna bring it back! What do you think of featuring more readers into the blog? Like readers sending in “What’s In My Makeup Bag” posts, etc? Yay or nay? ALSO, I’m being asked left and right about blogging; what do you think if I do a blogging “column” here, maybe once a month (not too much as it’s still a beauty blog) to answer some of your more “techy” questions? I’m no expert but I’ve been blogging since I was 16 (almost 8 years, damn!) so I might know a thing or two!

UPDATE: Ahhh, another question I totally forgot to ask earlier! I am really wanting to do the YouTube channel soon but my eyes are still looking awful… do you have any ideas for videos where I don’t have to be on camera, or should I just wear sunglasses?! Haha!

Thanks so much for your feedback. As you can see, Bailey is patiently awaiting to hear your thoughts!

Hi Renee! Total beauty n00b question, but… if I’m going to be mostly covered up (opaque tights, a long-sleeved shirt) when I go out, should I still apply sunscreen on my arms and legs? And that reader submission idea is extremely cool. It gets my vote :D Cheers!

P/S I used to have a dog that looks like Bailey, named Spidey :p

Reply

Renee January 27, 2012 at 13:29

Aww Spidey, how adorable. :) What happened to him/her?

Hmm… this is a tough one! I would say NO (I actually don’t put on sunscreen on my body for daily things, only to swim/beach) but I also know that clothes have very little “spf”, so if you want to be very sure, you should.

Reply

Tammi January 27, 2012 at 16:03

Spidey is still alive and well, but my family moved to a condo that doesn’t allow pets, so he’s with a former neighbour now ):

Oh, so you usually only apply it on your face? Which brings me to another question: Is it all right to use my regular sunscreen (I’m using Neutrogena’s Ultra-Sheer sunblock now) on my face, or should I go out and get one that’s especially formulated for that?

Reply

Renee January 28, 2012 at 13:43

Yep! It depends… some people’s skin can take sunscreen anywhere, so they just use the same sunscreen head to toe! I however will never let a body sunscreen on my face, so I’d recommend one specially for the face, and one that is oil-free ’cause sunscreens tend to be SUPER greasy. And grease = zits galore!

and youtube would be pretty cool too. (: wear sunglasses. !

my q for you: how to create a super super dewy look?
and something not beauty related: how are you? haha. not exactly imaginative huh.

Renee January 27, 2012 at 13:31

Thanks so much Ann, OK one vote for sunglasses haha!

I am fine thank you! I am actually very happy, was just thinking how the first month of 2012 has gone so well! really blessed. How are you?

Super super dewy look you say?! Have you tried this weird tip? http://beautyfool.com/want-dewy-looking-skin-try-this-celebrity-red-carpet-secret/ LOL!

But for normal dewy, try an illuminating tinted moisturizer, and skip the powder.

I love the idea for readers sending in “What’s in my make-up bag?” or maybe some everyday or fancy looks. I am very interested in beauty and make-up(i’m studying this in school) and maybe you should get some feedback from people that read your blog, like say if you’re doing a review then you could send out an email to your subscribers or something and get their opinion to :D
Just some thoughts and i’m so happy that you’ll be focusing more on the site :)

I love your suggestion so much! Thank you, it’s such a great idea. I think an email might “spam” them too much but I can def do it through Twitter and see what replies I get… I really like that idea, thanks so much!

And thank you, I’m happy to be spending more time here again… it’s my true love ;)

Hey Renee! I’d love to see some posts from readers :) the more posts, the better haha!

My question – how to apply liquid liner? or pencil liner, thinly? :s I wear pencil liner a lot, but I really can’t make it thin. It always comes out too heavy! And I always mess up liquid liner

And awh Bailey!

Reply

Renee January 27, 2012 at 13:37

Awesome, thank you!

Hmmm… for pencil it’s quite tough – I have to say it’s all about the pencil! Just sharpen it a lot, and when applying, try to slant your pencil lower (towards your eyelashes), or even apply it with your pencil almost vertical (instead of horizontal). Is this making sense?!? Haha. Basically, apply it downwards as opposed to across, ’cause that’s when the pencil starts to become more blunt and go on wider.

As for liquid liner… oh my goodness, I am not sure if I have even got it, and I LOVE it! It’s all about practice… what do you mess up about it? What I used to do is put pencil eyeliner first, and then trace that line with the liquid – really helps!

Reply

Kayla January 28, 2012 at 13:35

Haha, don’t worry, I get what you mean. That totally helps!

With liquid – I can’t make it all stick near my lashline, if you get what I mean. Half of it goes on fine, and then I always end up messing up, and it starts to creep up my eyelid. Not to mention putting it on my bottom lash line – I get it in my eye all the time!

Reply

Renee January 28, 2012 at 13:48

Oh Kayla – no liquid liner on the bottom lash line! Very bad! I mean, I suppose you could, but it’s meant only for the top lashes, and I can imagine it getting into your eye a lot and it can’t be good for your eyes. :(

I know what you mean about it creeping on your eyelid – that unfortunately is the formula :( I get that a lot but what I do that helps (a little) is that after the liquid liner, apply some eyeshadow on top of it and it should “stick”. If all else fails, try a waterproof formula. xx

This isn’t a question, but A youtube channel!? I’m super excited!!! Perhaps shows a nail tutorial of some sort?

Reply

Renee January 27, 2012 at 13:38

Aw I’m glad you like the idea Sherry! Sure, what kind of nail tutorial? I’m quite bad when it comes to nail polish :-P

Reply

Sherry January 29, 2012 at 09:01

maybe something cute like panda themed nails :) Or a review on you favorite nail polishes. You don’t have to be in the shot you can just have the camera angled at your hands and talk about them :)

Reply

Jenny January 27, 2012 at 04:06

Ooh! I’m excited about the Youtube Channel. =D Haha, sunglasses work. I think it depends on what kind of videos you want to make. If you want to start off with make-up tutorials you could always ask a friend who’s willing to be the one in front of the camera while you do the make-up. Although I’m pretty sure that we would watch your videos no matter what you look like. =) Whatever you decide on doing, it’ll be great!

Reply

Renee January 27, 2012 at 13:40

Thanks so much, Jenny! :) Yeah, makeup tutorials are out of the question right now ’cause of my eyes, and also I doubt any of my friends would like to be my “model”. Most of my girlfriends don’t wear makeup (no one is like me haha), and the guys… oh maybe I can force one of my buddies?! LOL.

But thank you. :) I’m trying to brainstorm, maybe I can do reviews and show my collections of something… thinking! xx

I’d love to see ‘what’s in your make-up bag’ posts from readers. I find most of my favorite products by word of mouth or through seeing someone talk about it on a blog so this would be a great place to find new cool products. Great blog by the way, always nice to see it pop up on my bloglovin’ page :)

I love having a nosey through other people’s make-up bags or even bathroom cabinets (à la INTO THE GLOSS), so a feature on what your readers (or friends) use would be right up my alley – I think it tells you so much about a person, plus you might just discover your next favourite product ;)

Renee January 28, 2012 at 20:33

Hey Tee!

Facial cleansers…. hmm that is a tough one as what might work for me might not work for you! But, there is a list of brands that do not test on animals here:

http://beautyfool.com/which-beauty-brands-do-not-test-on-animals/

What I’ve personally been using is Clinique :) For cruelty free products at the drugstore, it is best to look for natural/organic ranges as everything that is “mass brand” (L’Oreal, Garnier, Neutrogena) all sadly test on animals. :(

Hey Abby!

Hmmm… do you mean skincare or makeup products? There are a few I know!

Skincare: Clinique, Avenue, Theraphetic

Makeup: Mineral makeup!!! I love Avalon Organics for their powders, for foundations I like Laura Mercier Tinted Moisturizer or Bobbi Brown’s BB Cream. :D

Ooh and should I? But if you are already getting it should I still review Bellabox? I’ll def be getting it as I love the whole brand, but do you think readers will like it if I review it every month? I don’t want to annoy them haha! xx

Reader input & a techie column sound great! I’ve been blogging on & off for years but there’s always room to learn more!

Starting YouTube videos sounds like fun. You could do nail videos or a what’s in my bag video? I’ve been toying with the idea of doing YouTube myself, but I’m too shy!

Reply

Renee January 28, 2012 at 20:37

Thanks Cheryl! I think for sure the “What’s in my makeup bag” is good to go, everyone seems to love that! :D We’ll have to see about the techie column, so far no one has said anything but you! Maybe those who have emailed me regarding the blog stuff wanted to know about it privately?

Aww I wish we were in the same country, we could do one together! I am super shy to do one and have been putting it off for years, would be less stressful with someone else :-P If I do it, you do it? Haha! xx

Personally, i think that’s pretty cool :D but i wouldn’t wanna read too much into other people’s blogs since i’m on YOUR blog…
with youtube..you don’t have to be on camera yourself. you can just have a model, on whom you can …well perform your tutorials? [camera focused on her and your hands]
or you can have powerful camera lights……yeah. o.o you could ask other popular beauty videobloggers on youtube.

Reply

Renee January 28, 2012 at 20:40

Hey Nayla!!

Thank you :) Yes, understand, definitely still my blog but maybe once a month or so to mix things up? I’d love to see what you guys use as well! Don’t worry, it won’t take over the blog, it’ll still be me :D

Yeah I think for now I will have to do with “my hands only”! I have tested the camera today, look for a video very soon ;) And I will definitely ask some of my YouTube buddies, I am clueless with the camera :P

Thanks so much for your input Nayla! I hope you are having a great weekend so far! <3

Ooh… toughie. To be honest I haven’t found a mask that helps blackheads. :( The only thing that seems to work for me are the pore strips (but not that well) and good old squeezing LOL. But! My mom uses Kose’s Mask White and she SWEARS by it, and it has a lot of raving reviews. Hmm, should I borrow hers and review it here? :D

I would like to know if i’m the only one who curls the bottom lashes accidentally when using an eyelash curler? It really ruins the lashes on the outside bottom lash and makes it hard to apply mascara there. :( is there any solution to this or am i just a freak of nature?!

Reply

Renee January 28, 2012 at 23:10

Hey Mandy!

Hmm… I have never heard of that before actually! Maybe open your eyes really wide so that your lashes are as high as possible before curling them? Can any other readers help? Or or or! Have you tried curling mascaras? They work! I actually never use an eyelash curler anymore! Good luck xx

Ah… I have some chronic condition now after I tried on new contact lenses last year. Johnson&Johnson’s lenses SUCK! :(

I do my own brows ’cause I am obsessed! Ooooh great idea for a post! I should write a post on that actually, it’s too long to explain! I’ll write a post soon! :D

Hi Renee,

Love your blog! A couple of beauty questions:
1) Should one go for a proper sunblock or a makeup base with spf?
2) Any idea on the best treatments/rescue for frizzy hair woes? I’ve tried Argan oil and the results are so so. I’ve read your post on Argan oil and digital perm and am wondering if one should perm shoulder length hair instead of constant rebonding instead.

Keep up the good work!
Cheers

Reply

Renee January 30, 2012 at 11:45

Hey, thanks Kelly! :)

OK, here goes:

1) Up to you really! I personally find “normal” sunblocks super greasy, so I tend to go for makeup based ones. It’s really up to preference, after all at the end of the day they are the same. :D If you’re looking for a fantastic makeup sunblock, you should try Clarins UV plus HP one… it is AMAZING.

2) Rebonding or perming is bad for your hair, end of story! No one is better than the other, both are chemicals and are horrible! Of course, they are both very different so it’s up to you if you want curly or straight hair.

As for frizz, have you tried coconut oil? It’s very good! xx

Hi Renee,

I’ve been having this keloid just right beneath where the two collarbones end. It itches and swells once in a while. Do you have any tips to get rid of it? I have it for years ): And I have sensitive skin! I matched four out of the six you listed in another post.

Oh dear Youhuai… keloids are pretty tough, I think that’ll require surgery :( Have you tried asking your doctor about it?

Dani February 1, 2012 at 06:19

Hey Renee,

Personally I really like the idea of the what’s in your bag idea, but I don’t know about you, the standard things I keep in my bag stay there for a while so reader submissions on that front would maybe be a better way to sustain posts like that. I know you’ve done a few posts about getting healthy and self-esteem etc. so maybe a follow-up posts from readers who have tried your ideas and thier experiences as well, I know you primarily run a beauty blog but it might be nice.

I do have a question though: how often should I exfoliate my face/body, is there any frequency at whch it could do more harm than good to my skin?

I hope you are keeping well xx

Reply

Renee February 1, 2012 at 21:39

Hey Dani,

Thanks for the ideas! I would really love to try a lot of reader submission ideas (like what you said about the self esteem topics, it’s still to do with beauty!) but of course it has to come from the readers, so it’s totally up to them! I will try with the makeup posts first and see how it goes. :)

As for exfoliation, I think for the face, if it’s a gentle exfoliator, some claim you can do it everyday, but that could be harsh, so I’d say no more than 3 times a week. but if it’s quite a deep cleansing/harsh exfoliator, I think once a week is more that enough… As for body exfoliators, I think the skin on our body is less sensitive to the skin on our faces, so it’s really up to you. But personally I try not to irritate my skin a lot , so if you too have skin that gets irritated easily, I’d twice a week is enough! xx
